Broughton's women's soccer team, which entered the week ranked #9 in the Eurosport 4A rankings with an unblemished record at 6-0, dropped its first match of the season last night at Wakefield High School, 2-1.  The Caps knew that the Wolverines would be a fierce opponent as they are led by Duke recruit Kat McDonald in the midfield.  Broughton's side came out to compete early with its first opportunity on a shot on goal by junior Sarah Grace Lasso that was stopped by the Wakefield goal keeper.  Unfortunately, the momentum shifted quickly and the Wolverines put themselves up 2-0 on goals by McDonald and Nanni in the 25th and 27th minutes.  Junior Emma Willard tried to get one back for the Caps a minute later, but her shot just outside the goal line at the left of the goal face went wide.  Broughton kept fighting and in the 30th minute freshman Meredith Brown notched her third goal of the campaign.  Senior Allie Cutler kept the Wolverines from adding to the score with terrific saves in the 39th and 40th minutes.  She tallied seven saves at halftime.  The second half saw the Caps continue to work to get the equalizer.  In the 45th minute junior Julia Stevens had a shot on goal that was saved by the keeper.  A minute later, Cutler went back where she left off saving a shot by Wakefield's McDonald.  In the 55th minute, there was a flurry of activity in the Wolverines 18 yard box following a Caps corner kick with Brown and sophomore Savannah Jones having a go at the keeper only to be rejected.  Freshman Lucy Krueger got in on the action with a free kick on goal in the 63rd, only to be stopped.  Two minutes later junior Kelly Ann Evans had her left-footed crack at goal deflected by the post.  Wakefield didn't lie down for the second half however, and in the 70th had a shot from point blank range deflect off the post.  Another two minutes later, Cutler made a brilliant save after being challenged one-on-one by a dribbling Wolverine player.  Another Wakefield shot caromed off the post in the 75th minute.  The Caps continued to scrap for an equalizer to send the game into overtime, but it was not to happen.  Final score 2-1.  The Caps remain atop the Cap 8 table tied with Millbrook High School at 4-1.  Broughton is in action tomorrow night at 4:30/6:30 when they travel east on New Bern Avenue to Enloe High School (0-4, Cap 8).
