CAPS CONCLUDE GREAT 2015 CAMPAIGN WITH TOUGH LOSS

For the second year in a row the John T. Hoggard High School Vikings eliminated the Broughton Caps from the NCHSAA 4-A state tournament.  Last year it occurred in the first round;  this year in the fourth.  The Vikings played 5 defensive players against the potent Caps attack and marked junior striker Emma Willard with 2 players.  The Caps had no answer to Hoggard "parking the bus" in our attacking third.  Hoggard scored in the first half and parlayed the goal into a 1-0 victory and a visit to the Eastern Region championship game at Panther Creek High School.  Broughton finished the season 15-3-2.  Congratulations to the Caps on a terrific season and thanks to the seniors - Allie Cutler, Carson Taylor, and Dakota Zuehlke!

CAPITALS SLAY UNDEFEATED VIKINGS!

On Tuesday evening the Broughton Capitals women's soccer team traveled an hour and a half down east for a third round match against the #1 seed in the NCHSAA 4-A tournament, D. H. Conley Vikings.  Result?  Caps move on to the fourth round with a resounding 3-0 victory!  After a more than 30 minute weather delay due to thunderstorms, the Caps took it to the undefeated opponents when junior Sarah Grace Lasso sent a beautiful cross into the box that junior Julia Stevens connected with for a arching header that just cleared the goal keeper's hands just under the cross bar to put Broughton up 1-0. Twenty-two minutes later junior Emma Willard blasted a rocket at the defenseless Vikings keeper for the Caps second goal on the night. Junior Mattison Zinner credited with the assist. Finally, in the 38th minute Willard would receive the ball from junior Lily Schneider and again find the back of the net slotting a shot from the right side off the keeper's hand to put Broughton up 3-0. The Caps would persevere through a second half of some very physical down east soccer, and senior captain Allie Cutler would make some great saves to keep the clean sheet and send the Caps to the next round.  Broughton awaits the winner of #5 seed J. T. Hoggard High School and #29 seed Holly Springs High School.  If Hoggard, the Caps will travel to Wilmington Friday night, if Holly Springs, the Caps will be back home Friday night.

BYE, BYE, BUCCANEERS!

#11 ranked Broughton's women's soccer team welcomed #7 ranked E. A. Laney High School from Wilmington for the second round of the NCHSAA 4-A play-offs Friday night.  It was a beautiful night for the beautiful game, and the Buccaneers, in stereotypical "beach" style, arrived late for the kick-off.  The extra warm-up did not affect the Caps one bit, as the ladies came out firing and when it was all said and done, walked off the pitch with a 5-1 result and a Tuesday night third round match-up against undefeated and #1 East seeded D. H. Conley High School in Greenville (although ranked #10 in the final Eurosport poll).  Broughton got goals on the night from 5 different players:

12th  minute - Daisy King;
32nd minute - Savannah Jones;
39th  minute - Sarah Grace Lasso;
55th  minute - Meredith Brown;
63rd  minute - Emma Willard.

The Buccaneers managed to one goal past senior captain goal keeper Allie Cutler in the 69th minute. Please make the hour and a half drive to Conley Tuesday night to cheer on the Caps and keep the momentum going all the way to the State Championship!  Game time is 6:00.

THIRD TIMES A CHARM!

The Broughton women's soccer team began its quest for a 4-A state championship Wednesday night by getting a monkey off its back, or should I say, Wolverine.  #25 seed Wakefield, the only team to defeat the Caps this season, twice, came to 723 St. Mary's Street for the first round of the play-offs against the #8 seed Caps.  The atmosphere was electric as Broughton took the pitch for what will go down as one of the most exciting games this season!  The Caps exerted relentless pressure from the attacking third, through the midfield, into the defensive third.  Broughton dominated possession in the first 40 minutes, but could not put the ball into the net, despite working very hard to do so and having several opportunities.  There would be no letting the foot off the pedal in the second half as the Caps came out with the same intensity.  The game became physical at times, with a yellow card being shown to a Wolverine player for pulling junior Lily Highsmith down by her long red locks.  Broughton persisted, and in the 71st minute hit pay-dirt when junior Emma Willard found the ole' onion bag (yes, I had to say it) to put the Caps ahead 1-0.  With the minutes waning, Wakefield cranked up the pressure and physical play, but the Caps responded and walked away with the victory! Broughton welcomes Emsley A. Laney High School from Wilmington, the alma mater of Michael Jordan, to campus for the second round game.  The game will be played 7:30pm, Friday night. Sanderson and Leesville Road also advanced over New Hanover and Durham Jordan, while Millbrook fell to East Chapel Hill.

The Caps Men's Golf Team capped off a very successful season with a second place finish in the State 4A Championship held in Pinehurst.  The Caps entered day two in third place behind Myers Park and Pinecrest.  The team came to play on Pinehurst # 4 today and finished with an even par team score led by Seniors Stephen Saleeby and Harrison Rhoades both going under par with scores of 70.
The remaining three Caps players also played solid golf with matching scores of 74 from Senior Preyer Fountain and Sophomore Jimbo Stanley with Senior Will Minton one shot back at 75.

The Caps gave it all they had but the team from Pinecrest fired a team score of 4 under par for the day to capture the crown.

BHS Golf in Battle for State 4 A State Championship after Day One

BHS Men's Golf completed the first day of competition in the State 4A Championship in a very tight race for the top spot. Playing on the difficult Pinehurst #2 Course from just under 7,000 yards the Caps were led by a very impressive 73 from Senior Stephen Saleeby.  The next three scores that counted for BHS were all very solid 77's contributed by Seniors Harrison Rhoades and Will Minton and Sophomore Jimbo Stanley.  BHS's total day one score of 304 places the team two shots back of Pinecrest and four back of Myers Park.  The next closest competitor Hough posted a 315.

The Championship will be decided tomorrow on Pinehurst #4.  Go Caps!

100 MINUTES OF SOCCER = CAP 8 CHAMPIONS!

It took the Broughton women's soccer team 80 minutes of regulation and two 10 minute overtime periods to end the 2015 regular season with a 1-1 draw at Sanderson High School and claim the Cap 8 championship with an 10-2-2 conference record!  The Caps opened the scoring in the 12th minute when junior Lily Schneider found the back of the net with a superb blast after receiving a well-played ball from freshman Meredith Brown.  In what was probably the best game of played by both teams this season, the Spartans fought back and in the 37th minute junior Anna Sheridan, a CASL teammate of junior Sarah Grace Lasso's, fired a high arching shot from just beyond the 18 yard box that squeaked in between senior Allie Cutler's outstretched arms and the cross bar, 1-1.  That is where the goals would end, as for the next 63 minutes the two sides would battle up and down the pitch.  When the final whistle blew, the Caps claimed its first conference championship in this humble correspondent's three years of covering Broughton women's soccer.  The Caps finish the regular season 12-2-2 and now await the announcement of the NCHSAA 4-1 tournament seedings.  The Caps expect a top eight seeding which would put them in the friendly confines of Broughton High School for the first two rounds of the tournament.  Congratulations Coach Mastin and Caps!

Soccer: Caps win defensive contest at Heritage

The Caps won a hard-fought defensive battle Wednesday night to earn a 2-0 victory at Heritage and set the stage for tonight's season-ending showdown with Sanderson.

Inspired by their Senior Night festivities, the Heritage Huskies initially took the fight to Broughton, forcing freshman defender Lucy Krueger to block a dangerous ball on a corner kick in the opening minutes. But the game then settled into a back-and-forth, physical affair, with both teams struggling to create scoring opportunities.

The Caps finally broke through in the 18th minute when junior Emma Willard drew defenders to her before making a nice pass in the box to freshman Meredith Brown, who put the ball in the back of the net to give Broughton a 1-0 lead.

The defensive struggle continued, though, with Broughton's back line scrambling time and again to thwart Heritage attacks and the Caps front line trying to create scoring chances. Freshman Taylor Sutter, in a play that was indicative of the game's defensive nature, made a great hustle play in the 35th minute to stop a Heritage breakaway and preserve the Caps' narrow 1-0 lead.

The Caps managed to tack on another goal just before halftime when junior Kelly Ann Evans finished off a pass from Willard in the 38th minute to put Broughton up 2-0. It was Willard's second assist on the night.

The physical, defensive play continued throughout the second half, with seniors Carson Taylor and Allie Cutler leading the way as Broughton juggled its back line because of injuries. Several players -- juniors Sarah Grace Lasso, Daisy King and Lily Highsmith, and sophomore Kathryn Weil -- stepped up to make defensive stops. Cutler made a scrambling save on a dangerous ball in the game's final seconds to preserve the Caps' second consecutive shutout.

The Caps end their season tonight in a critical game at Sanderson, which has not lost since Broughton defeated them on April 1. Broughton is on top of the Cap 8 standings at 10-2-1, while Sanderson is in second place at 9-2-2.

BHS Captures 4A Mid East Regional

BHS Men's Golf captured the 4A East Mid Regional Crown today with a resounding 13 shot advantage over the next competitor Leesville High School.  The event took place at what many consider the hardest golf course in Raleigh:  Raleigh Country Club.  Faced with lightning fast greens rolling over 13 on the stimpmeter the Caps were led by their four Seniors today.  Stephen Saleeby led the team with a 73 followed by a 74 by Will Minton.  The scoring was then rounded out by a 76 from Preyer Fountain and a 77 from Harrison Rhoades.  These were outstanding scores on this course.

The Caps advance to the State Championship next week where they will compete on Pinehurst # 2 and # 4.

MERCY!

On a beautiful Cinco de Mayo Eve, the Broughton Caps womens soccer team welcomed (well, not really) the Enloe Eagles to campus for Senior Night.  I don't know that I can come up with enough "strikes", "shots", "back of the nets", "golazos", and, of course, "onion bags" to write about the match.  So, here is the "nutshell" version:

23' - Junior Lily Schneider splits defense (which had been pushing up and catching the Caps in an offside trap), 1-0;
27' - Freshman Meredith Brown, 2-0;
29' - Brown taken down inside the 18 yard box, converts PK, 3-0;
35' - Junior Emma Willard, 4-0;
38' - Junior Kelly Ann Evans, 5-0;
Halftime, thank goodness.
48' - Schneider off corner kick, 6-0;
49' - Sophomore Savannah Jones, 7-0;
57' - Willard (yes, you may inquire, she was still playing in the 57'), 8-0;
75' - Junior Lizzie Tollison! 9-0;

At that point the "mercy rule" was applied and the Caps walked away with a Senior Night victory.

Congratulations to our wonderful Seniors - Allie Cutler, Carson Taylor, and Dakota Zuehlke!

The Caps improved to 11-2-1/9-2-1 in Cap 8.  Broughton remains top of the table in Cap 8 and #14 in the most recent Eurosport 4-A poll.  The regular season will conclude with away fixtures at Heritage High School at 6:30 Wednesday night and at Sanderson High School at 6:30 Thursday night.  Come out and support the Caps as they try to hold on to the Cap 8 championship and get ready for the State Play-Offs!
