100 MINUTES OF SOCCER = CAP 8 CHAMPIONS!
It took the Broughton women's soccer team 80 minutes of regulation and two 10 minute overtime periods to end the 2015 regular season with a 1-1 draw at Sanderson High School and claim the Cap 8 championship with an 10-2-2 conference record! The Caps opened the scoring in the 12th minute when junior Lily Schneider found the back of the net with a superb blast after receiving a well-played ball from freshman Meredith Brown. In what was probably the best game of played by both teams this season, the Spartans fought back and in the 37th minute junior Anna Sheridan, a CASL teammate of junior Sarah Grace Lasso's, fired a high arching shot from just beyond the 18 yard box that squeaked in between senior Allie Cutler's outstretched arms and the cross bar, 1-1. That is where the goals would end, as for the next 63 minutes the two sides would battle up and down the pitch. When the final whistle blew, the Caps claimed its first conference championship in this humble correspondent's three years of covering Broughton women's soccer. The Caps finish the regular season 12-2-2 and now await the announcement of the NCHSAA 4-1 tournament seedings. The Caps expect a top eight seeding which would put them in the friendly confines of Broughton High School for the first two rounds of the tournament. Congratulations Coach Mastin and Caps!
