Caps' Soccer Blasts Imps

Sam Stein, Ibrahim Mohamud, Bryant O'Neal, Jack Nickens and Elvis Wiredu

The Broughton soccer team notched its second consecutive shutout, beating the Cary Imps 4-0 at Cary's Cooper Field. The match was much closer than the score would indicate, as Cary's strong midfield controlled possession for much of the night, but Broughton's strong defense, including a stellar showing from Junior keeper Jack Nickens, kept the Imps off the scoreboard. Broughton's constant pressure and counter-attacking made the difference in the match. as Broughton took advantage of its opportunities and Cary did not.

Senior co-captain Elvis Wiredu was a disruptive force throughout the match, and in the 11th minute, his firecracker from 35 yard deflected off a Cary defender and found the back of the net. Wiredu helped create the Caps' second goal 11 minutes later, sending a perfect pass to super-frosh Lucas Beeson on the left side of the box, and Beeson calmly slotted a pass to a charging Ibrahim Mohamud who easily finished the goal.

Nickens was caught wrong-footed in the 25th minute after a knuckling shot but quickly recovered and made a remarkable save.

Senior co-captain Bryant O'Neal decided to challenge the Cary keeper in the 38th minute, firing a rocket from over 40 yards out. A wise decision it was, as the keeper misplayed the shot, making the score 3-0 at the half. Cary actually outshot Broughton in the first half, 14-7, but Nickens' five saves repeatedly frustrated the home team.

Nickens came up big again in the 58th minute, making a kick save on a Cary breakaway, and two minutes later, Mohamud was fouled in the box. Super-sub Sam Stein calmly buried the penalty to end the scoring for the night. Broughton finished with 19 shots, 9 of them on goal while Cary had 23 shots, 9 on frame. Nickens totaled 9 saves on the night.

Broughton's record improved to 3-2. The Caps' have two more non-conference matches next week before beginning Cap-8 play the following week. Broughton first plays perennial power Cardinal Gibbons at Heritage High on Tuesday, September 1st and then East Wake at home the following night. Please come out and cheer for your Caps.

Caps' Soccer Conquers Knights

The Broughton soccer team exhibited great depth and balance in a 5-0 victory over the Knightdale Knights Wednesday night at Broughton. The match opened up tightly with Broughton having the first look at goal when freshman Lucas Beeson's shot was punched away by the Knightdale keeper and Liam Wall's rebound clanked off the right post. The Caps' high defensive pressure led to the first goal after C. Badweh's aggressive tackle and steal in the Knight's box gave him the opportunity to tuck it past the keeper to the far post in the 19th minute. Broughton outshot the Knights 11-6 in the first half, but they couldn't extend their one goal lead.

Broughton's continued pressure finally wore down Knightdale. Elvis Wiredu was unlucky when his screamer from distance hit the crossbar. Seven minutes later, Ibrahim Mohamud was taken down in the box and then converted the penalty kick. In the 59th minute, co-captain Bryant O'Neal blasted a free kick into the net from 20 yards away, taking advantage of a less than solid Knightdale wall. Junior Sam Stein made the most of his seven minutes of playing time by scoring his first varsity goal in the 79th minute after a great run, calmly slotting it past the keeper. A minute later, Stein struck again, when after working against two defenders, he dumped a short cross over to a hustling Jesse Dean, who buried it for Broughton's fifth and final goal.

Broughton outshot Knightdale 21-9. Sophomore Clay Oxford earned a clean sheet, playing the entire game in goal.

The Caps improved their record to 2-2 and next face Cary on the road on Thursday.

Men's Soccer Splits Opening Matches

The Broughton men's soccer team opened its 2015 season by splitting a pair of matches, winning at home 7-1 over Garner and losing 2-0 in a rain-shortened game at Panther Creek. Broughton, the 2014 State runner-up, lost three all-state and one all-region players to graduation and are looking to have a number of returning players and a handful of new faces step up to fill the void.

On Monday, August 17, Senior co-captain Elvis Wiredu notched a hat trick against the overmatched Garner squad, who were outshot 23-10, with 17 of the Broughton shots on frame. Also scoring were junior Graham Gunter, seniors Ibrahim Mohamud and C. Badweh, and finally, freshman Lucas Beason.

Broughton's dominance allowed Coach Nick Wheeler to work in a number of reserves, giving them needed experience against an athletic squad.

Sophomore keeper Clay Oxford started in goal for the Caps, and junior Jack Nickens took over in the second half, with the only blemish coming from a Garner header off of a free kick.

The Caps traveled to Panther Creek last night, falling behind 2-0 before rain and lightning caused an early end to the match.

Broughton returns to the pitch tonight at Holly Springs at 4:30.
