Caps Mash Millbrook

Keeper Clay Oxford and goal scorers Jesse Dean and Elvis Wiredu.

The Broughton men's soccer team may not have brought their "A" game to the pitch in a Cap 8 showdown against Millbrook, but a strong defensive effort and timely keeping by sophomore Clay Oxford led the Caps to a 2-0 victory. The Millbrook defense took advantage of an over-eager Broughton attack, with the Caps being repeatedly caught offside. Finally, in the 38th minute, senior Jesse Dean found space in the attacking third, beat a Millbrook defender, and slotted home Broughton's first goal.

The second half was a sloppy affair, with neither team able to control possession beyond a couple of passes. Millbrook nearly tied the match with three minutes remaining, but Oxford made the save of the match to thwart the Wildcats. A minute later, striker Elvis Wiredu scored on a breakaway after getting a sweet pass from Liam Wall.

The Broughton defense was well organized all night, with Hyu A also making a number of defensive stops. Clay Oxford earned the clean sheet and was solid throughout.

The Caps improved their record to 6-4, 2-1 in the Cap 8. They next play Sanderson on Thursday, September 24 at 6:30 pm at Broughton. If you can't attend, please follow the Caps' live twitter feed at @CapsMensSoccer.
