The Caps (8-0, 3-0) swept past Heritage (7-3, 2-1) 25-16, 25-17, 25-17 on Thursday night in Wake Forest. Kalee Vanderhorst paced the visitors with 16 kills (.727), 11 digs and 3 blocks and Katja Ehlers tallied 9 kills and 5 digs. Claire Sawyer posted 29 assists, 2 blocks and 9 digs and Tiana Butler had 5 kills (.444), 6 aces and 2 blocks. Rachel Byrd recorded 3 kills (1.000) and 3 blocks and Grace Youngblood chipped in 3 kills and 3 digs. Alden Willis scooped up 7 digs and Holli Smith added 3 digs.
Broughton jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start the match and a Vanderhorst kill pushed the score to 16-7. The Caps took a 5-1 lead in the second stanza but Heritage tightened things up at 15-13 before two Vanderhorst kills pushed the lead to 17-13. Rachel Byrd's kill made it 19-13 and Butler's block stretched it to 22-14. Vanderhorst closed out the set with another kill. The third frame began with the Huskies taking a 2-0 lead but a Vanderhorst kill gave the visitors a 8-6 edge. A kill by Ehlers made it 10-8 but Heritage fought back to take a 11-10 advantage. A kill and a block by Butler gave the Caps the lead again at 12-11 and a kill by Vanderhorst pushed the advantage to 16-12. A kill by Hannah Midles pulled the Huskies to 16-13 before the Capitals went on a 5-1 run punctuated by three more Vanderhorst kills, an ace by Butler and a kill by Byrd. Kalee Vanderhorst's kill from the back row ended the match.
The Caps continue conference play next Tuesday (9/15) with a match at Wake Forest (0-9, 0-2) before returning home to face Leesville Road (6-0, 3-0) on Thursday.
