Broughton (10-0, 5-0) handed visiting Leesville Road (7-1, 4-1) their first loss of the season 25-12, 26-24, 25-19 last night in Raleigh. Kalee Vanderhorst collected a match-high 16 kills (.609) and 7 digs and Katja Ehlers piled up 15 kills (.357), 2 blocks and 7 digs. Rachel Byrd added 5 kills (.556) and a match-high 6 blocks and Tiana Butler posted 3 kills (.600) and 9 digs. Kati Smith tallied 34 assists, 2 aces and 8 digs and Holli Smith chipped in 2 aces and 6 digs. Grace Youngblood had 2 kills and 5 blocks and Alden Willis picked up 3 digs.
The Caps jumped to a 6-1 lead to begin the match and a kill by Katja Ehlers stretched the margin to 14-7. Broughton closed the set with an 11-5 run. Broughton took a 10-7 lead in the second stanza on a Holli Smith ace and two kills by Ehlers pushed the advantage to 18-11. The Pride roared back to tie things up at 24-24 before two kills by Kalee Vanderhorst ended the set. A kill by Ehlers gave the Capitals their first lead at 7-6 in the third frame. The hosts then went on 15-6 burst punctuated by an ace by Kati Smith at 22-12. Tiana Butler's kill sealed the win after Leesville Road had closed to 24-19.
The Capitals travel to Millbrook next Tuesday before returning home to face Sanderson next Thursday.
