Volleyball Advances to Second Round, Hosts Apex Tuesday Night

Broughton (20-0) swept past Holly Springs (9-12) into the second round of the NCHSAA 4A state tournament with 25-10, 25-13, 25-12 win on Saturday night in Raleigh.  The Caps jumped to a 10-1 lead in the evening's first set behind the strong serving of Tiana Butler and cruised to a 25-10 win.  Broughton started fast in the second set as well by taking a 9-1 lead before claiming a 25-13 victory.  The hosts took a 5-2 lead to begin the final frame and ended the match on a 6-0 run after the Hawks had closed within 19-12. Kalee Vanderhorst collected 13 kills (.357), 1 ace and 7 digs and Tiana Butler piled up 6 kills (.625), 6 aces and 5 digs.  Katja Ehlers tallied 5 kills, 1 ace and 6 digs and Rachel Byrd had 5 kills (.625).  Kati Smith filled up the stat sheet with 27 assists, 5 aces, 7 digs and 2 kills.  Alden Willis had an ace and 2 assists and Holli Smith chipped in  a team-high 9 digs.

Broughton will host Apex (16-6) on Tuesday night at 6pm. after the Cougars swept New Hanover in their first round contest.
