Caps Soccer Ousted by Laney

After a season where all expectations were exceeded -- except for the expectations of the team itself -- the Broughton men's soccer team were ousted from the NCHSAA 4A playoffs by Wilmington Laney 2-0. The match was played before a raucous home crowd in Wilmington, and the Buccaneers showed why they beat top-seeded and #4 nationally ranked Apex, as they controlled possession throughout the majority of the game. An athletic, gifted, and savvy team, Laney won most of the 50-50 balls, had more shots, and generally controlled the match. But this Broughton team, who was without its leading scorer, dynamic senior Elvis Wiredu, for the third match in a row, frustrated Laney throughout the first half. Neither team had a great scoring opportunity, leading to a scoreless first half.

Laney came out a bit more aggressively in the second half, but Broughton held its own for the first 10 minutes. Unfortunately, the defense made the mistake of giving midfielder David Dailey, easily the most talented player on the pitch, too much space, and he buried a driving 25 yard shot into the far upper netting past Broughton keeper, Clay Oxford. Ten minutes later, 6 foot 3 inch Tristan Nelson soared above the Caps' defenders to head in a corner kick to put the Bucs up 2-0. The Caps gave the home team a bit of a scare when Grant Tyler's shot was barely parried over the cross bar by the Laney keep.

And so ends a fantastic season. The Caps admirably defended their Eastern Region championship, scrappily fighting for every goal and tenaciously defending throughout. The team did what every coach dreams of: getting better each week throughout the season.

A special shout out to the seniors of the team, who have worn the Broughton kit for a final time:

  • Benjamin McCord
  • Hyu A
  • Liam Wall
  • Nick Mizero
  • C Badweh
  • Ibrahim Mohamud

  • Grant Tyler
  • Bryant O'Neal
Thank you, gentlemen. Your career, and the team's successes, are attributable to you. The underclassmen have big shoes to fill

The Caps finished with a 15-7-3 record.

Join us to celebrate the team at the sports banquet on Monday at 5:30.

Caps Clip Hoggard -- Advance to Regional Semifinals

Ibrahim Mohamud calmly scores from the penalty spot.

In a match marred by numerous inexplicable yellow cards, two red cards, and a seemingly endless second half, the Broughton soccer team topped Wilmington Hoggard 1-0 in a third round match of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs. With the win, the Caps earn a berth in the regional semi-finals against either top-seeded (and #4 nationally ranked) Apex or Wilmington Laney.

Broughton, which was the home team even though the match was on the turf of the WRAL Soccer Center, played its second match in a row without leading scorer Elvis Wiredu. Despite the lack of firepower, the Caps figured out a way to win behind a well-organized defense and tons of ball pressure, forcing Hoggard into numerous turnovers. In the 15th minute, senior Ibrahim Mohamud juked a defender in the box, resulting in a foul and a penalty kick. Mohamud calmly slotted the kick past the diving keeper to notch what would turn out to be the only goal of the match.
Students took advantage of the school holiday to root for the Caps.

Both teams were frustrated by an officiating crew that could be viewed as being a bit sensitive, where yellow cards were handed out for simple fouls, or, in one instance, no foul at all. It was unfortunate for both teams that the match was called this way, as the officiating this season has been the best at the high school level in quite some time. The second half ran for over 51 minutes, even though the center referee only stopped the clock for 4 minutes -- thus, the half ran 7 minutes too long. (end of rant)

The Caps' season continues for at least one more match.
Regardless, the Broughton defense hung tough, including two consecutive spectacular saves by keeper Clay Oxford at the end of the first half. The Caps had senior co-captain Bryant O'Neal play at striker most of the match, and his physicality created a lot of problems for the Hoggard defense. Junior defender Jacob Hill, who has missed much of the season due to health reasons, filled in admirably in the back line and played perhaps his best match of the season,
Clay Oxford came up big with two huge saves. Ibrahim Mohamud scored the game winner.

The Caps improved their season record to 15-6-3. Broughton advances to the semi-finals of the East Region (aka, the "Elite Eight") and will likely play on Saturday. Broughton will be the visiting team, and the Caps hope to get the same level of fan support that came out to today's match.

Caps Top Leesville to Move to Third Round of Playoffs

Goal scorer Liam Wall, Keeper Clay Oxford, and senior defender, Bryant O'Neal, because he's a captain and he said he wanted to be in the photo, and who's to argue with the captain??

The Broughton Caps soccer team played perhaps their most complete match of the season and topped Cap 8 champion, Leesville Road, 1-0 on a rainy afternoon. The match was moved to the turf field of the WRAL Soccer Center, as no grass fields were playable due to the recent deluge of rain.

The Caps were  without leading goal scorer, senior striker Elvis Wiredu. Consequently, Broughton had to play a complete team game, which they did, involving the midfield more than in any prior match. Both teams hunkered down on defense, with Broughton frequently keeping six players behind the ball . Although each team had a couple of chances, nothing was overly close until the 60th minute, when Liam Wall collected a ball in the box and calmly slotted it past the Leesville keeper.

Coach Nick Wheeler frequently subbed his players, keeping them fresh, as the wet field led to some heavy legs later in the match. Sophomore keeper Clay Oxford came up big a couple of times in the last 15 minutes, include a brilliant parry of a would-be goal.

With the win, Broughton improved their record to 14-6-3. The Caps move onto the third round of the 4A NCHSAA playoffs, and they get to play at home against 20th seed, Wilmington Hoggard. Hoggard is 13-6-4 on the season and finished third in the Mideastern conference. They have beaten Southern Alamance and Clayton to advance this far.

The match is tentatively scheduled for 7 pm on Wednesday, November 11 at Broughton. Come out and root for the Caps!!

UPDATE: THE MATCH AGAINST HOGGARD WILL BE ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11 AT 2PM ON THE STADIUM FIELD AT THE WRAL SOCCER CENTER.

Soccer Playoffs: New Date, New Place

Broughton's second round playoff match against Leesville Road has been rescheduled for Monday, November 9, at 6:30 pm. Because of adverse field conditions at Leesville, the soccer match will be played at Millbrook High School. The winner of this match will host a third round contest against Hoggard later in the week (likely Wednesday).

Sports Banquet Rescheduled to November 16

The Fall Sports Banquet that was originally scheduled for this Monday, November 9, has been rescheduled for Monday, November 16 at 5:30 pm.

Due to the bad weather, the Broughton soccer playoff match that was to be played on Saturday was postponed until Monday. In order to have all teams represented at the banquet, the decision was made to reschedule the banquet to the following week.

Caps Trounce South View in First Round of Playoffs

Elvis Wiredu, Jack Nickens, Clay Oxford and Gray Gwaltney showing their excitement over their first round win.

The Broughton men's soccer team got off to a solid start in the 4A NCHSAA playoffs, topping the South View Tigers, 3-0, in a match that was not nearly as close as the score would indicate. The Caps dominated the entire match to the point where at one point, South View failed to possess the ball in the attacking half of the field over a 17 minute stretch.

Senior striker Elvis Wiredu scored two goals to lead the Caps, tallying scores in the 7th and 46th minutes. In the 26th minute, Gray Gwaltney  scored for the third match in a row, knocking home a shot off of a brilliant cross from Abdulle Ibrahim.

The Caps outshot the Tigers 36-8. Clay Oxford and Jack Nickens combined for the clean sheet, although they only had to make one save the entire evening.

The Caps will face a familiar opponent in the second round in Leesville Road, the Cap 8 champions. The match will likely be on Saturday and will be at Leesville. Kickoff time has not yet been announced.
