The Broughton Caps soccer team played perhaps their most complete match of the season and topped Cap 8 champion, Leesville Road, 1-0 on a rainy afternoon. The match was moved to the turf field of the WRAL Soccer Center, as no grass fields were playable due to the recent deluge of rain.
The Caps were without leading goal scorer, senior striker Elvis Wiredu. Consequently, Broughton had to play a complete team game, which they did, involving the midfield more than in any prior match. Both teams hunkered down on defense, with Broughton frequently keeping six players behind the ball . Although each team had a couple of chances, nothing was overly close until the 60th minute, when Liam Wall collected a ball in the box and calmly slotted it past the Leesville keeper.
Coach Nick Wheeler frequently subbed his players, keeping them fresh, as the wet field led to some heavy legs later in the match. Sophomore keeper Clay Oxford came up big a couple of times in the last 15 minutes, include a brilliant parry of a would-be goal.
With the win, Broughton improved their record to 14-6-3. The Caps move onto the third round of the 4A NCHSAA playoffs, and they get to play at home against 20th seed, Wilmington Hoggard. Hoggard is 13-6-4 on the season and finished third in the Mideastern conference. They have beaten Southern Alamance and Clayton to advance this far.
The match is tentatively scheduled for 7 pm on Wednesday, November 11 at Broughton. Come out and root for the Caps!!
UPDATE: THE MATCH AGAINST HOGGARD WILL BE ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11 AT 2PM ON THE STADIUM FIELD AT THE WRAL SOCCER CENTER.
