Philbeck places at WRAL Holiday Tournament

Nash Philbeck placed 5th Saturday in the toughest High School tournament in the region in a bracket with 30 other wrestlers from NC and VA. Wrestling in the 145lb. weight class, Nash won his first two matches to roll to the semifinals. He then valiantly plowed through the consolation bracket to impressively finish 5th. Nash's season record improves to 17-3.

Also contributing team points to the Broughton cause were Nic Valdespino and Christian Hite. Valdespino who placed 4th this this tournament last year won two matches to make it to the quarterfinals where he was derailed in a close decision by the returning state champion. Going 3-2 in the tournament, Nic improved his season record to 15-3.

Christian also rolled to the quarterfinals and won two big matches in the tournament. Christian runs his season record to 13-6. The Caps are in action again at home Wednesday, January 6th Vs. Sanderson and then January 8-9 at the Boneyard Bash hosted by Jack Britt High School.

Swimmers Take Third

     At last week’s swim meet, both the Broughton men and women’s teams took third.  There were many close, exciting races.  Several swimmers made their regional cut times.  Jack Messenger achieved his 4th cut, this time in the 100 freestyle.  Smith Moran made his cut in the 200 IM.  Carson Harvey made her cut in the 100 freestyle and the women’s 200 free relay made their cut time as well.
     Many swimmers cut a lot of time from previous meets.  Jeffrey Whittington cut 2.5 seconds in the 200 free, Ethan Harrop cut 4.5 seconds in the backstroke, Syd Spampinato cut 3 seconds in the IM,  Richie Soltis cut 5 seconds off his IM, Dalton Smith broke the 1:00 barrier in the 100 free for the first time with a 57.61, Duncan Matthews cut 1.5 seconds off his 100 free, Katie Watson cut 2 seconds off her backstroke, and Anna Strickland cut 2.5 seconds off her breaststroke.

 Winning for the men at the meet were:
     200 freestyle relay – David Washburn, Crandall Close, Smith Moran, and Jack Messenger
     Smith Moran – 200 IM
     Jack Messenger – 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke

Winning for the women were:
     200 freestyle relay – Carson Harvey, Caroline Willis, Alexandra Smalto, and Stella Kempf

     Carson Harvey – 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle

Two Champions and Four Place at Green Hope Grapple

Broughton Varsity and JV wrestlers competed this weekend at the Green Hope Grapple wrestling tournament against 14 other area high schools including Apex, Green Hope, Fuquay, Cardinal Gibbons and others. Nash Philbeck went 3-0 to take the 145 lb. championship and Nic Valdespino went 4-0 to win the 126 lb. bracket.  Jack Elliott and Christian Hite also had a great tournaments with Jack earning runner-up honors and Christian placing third. Caps are in action again Wednesday night for a home Cap 8 dual Vs. Leesville Rd.

Swimmers Almost Perfect

In a swimming tri-meet, a perfect score is 168, meaning your team took first and second in every event.  In last week’s swim meet in Smithfield, the CAPS were almost perfect on both the men’s and women’s sides.  The scores were as follows:

Maxwell's Pin Secures Win in Cap 8 Opener Vs. Wake Forest


Patrick Maxwell pinned his opponent in the last match of Broughton's opening Cap 8 Conference dual tonight at Wake Forest HS to seal a come-from-behind victory, 41-39. The evening was special and spirited as it was dedicated to the memory of Lamont Burt, Broughton's Senior team captain from last year who tragically passed away over the summer. Clearly inspired, BHS highlights were as follows:

  • Dominic Ashford (120 lbs) Win by Fall; wins his 2nd match of season
  • Nic Valdespino (126 lbs) Win by Fall; season record 8-0
  • Nash Philbeck (145 lbs) Win by Fall; season record 8-0
  • Patrick Maxwell (152 lbs) Win by Fall; first varsity win
  • Parker Batts (160 lbs) Win by DQ; wins his 3rd match of the season
  • Christian Hite (170 lbs) Win by Tech Fall; season record 6-2

The Caps will be in action again this Saturday, at the Green Hope Grapple, an individual bracketed double elimination tournament, and then again on Wednesday, the 9th for a Cap 8 dual meet at home Vs. Leesville Rd.
