Soccer: A TALE OF TWO HALVES...

The Broughton Caps women's soccer team improved its 2015 record to 5-0 (3-0 Cap 8) Monday night with a 4-1 result at Millbrook High School.  The Caps entered the contest ranked #9 in the latest Eurosport 4-A rankings behind a strong 4 win start which included 3 clean sheets.  It was evident that Broughton's side was coming off a Spring Break from training, as the Caps' first half left a lot to be desired.  It was a beautiful evening for football at Millbrook with the rain having cleared and the temperatures mild.  The Wildcats came out attacking and in the 5th minute senior goalkeeper Allie Cutler had to deflect a shot fired across the goal mouth.  The Caps kept working though and in the 12th minute sophomore Savannah Jones buried a shot from just beyond the 18 yard box to put Broughton on top.  Freshman Lucy Krueger was credited with an assist.  The half would not be settled however, as 14 minutes later junior defender Daisy King was called for a foul on what appeared to be a 50/50 ball just inside the 18 and Millbrook was awarded a penalty kick, which it converted to knot the score going into halftime.

Coach Mastin made adjustments at the half and the Caps came out a totally different side.  In the 55th minute it appeared that junior Lily Schneider was fouled inside the 18, but no penalty was awarded and in fact, Millbrook was awarded the ball.  Six minutes later junior Julia Stevens shook off her Spring Break cobwebs and fired a shot past the Wildcats goal keeper to open her account for the campaign to put the Caps up 2-1.  Not to be outdone, 5 minutes later leading scorer junior Emma Willard was played a ball by Schneider, took a touch, pulled the 'Cats keeper out and chipped it into the back of the net for a 3-1 lead.  The Caps did not let up and in the 69th minute Stevens received a ball from freshman Taylor Sutter and put it in the ole onion bag for her second goal on the night.

Broughton returns to the pitch Wednesday night when it welcomes Cap 8 rival Sanderson High School (2-3/1-1 Cap 8) to 723 St. Mary's Street.  Kick-off against the Spartans for JV will be at 4:30 and 6:30 for varsity.

Soccer: Caps win a squeaker at The Brittany

The Caps women's soccer team hit the road Friday night for the first time this season, and came home with a 2-1 win over New Bern in a hard-fought contest at The Brittany Soccer Showcase in Wilson.

With spring break (abbreviated though it may be) on the horizon, the Caps were without two of their usual starters as they took to the field in Wilson. But Broughton struck first, when junior Emma Willard buried a pass from junior Lily Schneider into the back of the net in the 13th minute. It was Willard's fifth goal of the season.

Broughton controlled possession for most of the first half, but was unable to convert several scoring opportunities late in the half.

The Caps lost a third starter, when Willard was not able to return for the second half because of an injury. New Bern initially took the attack to the Caps as the second half began, forcing senior keeper Allie Cutler to make a great save on a shot in the 53rd minute. About three minutes later, New Bern managed to score the first goal of the season against Broughton to tie the game at 1-1.

Broughton stepped up its attack at that point, and had several corner kicks and other scoring opportunities that ended with shots going just wide or directly at the New Bern keeper. Both teams played at a frantic pace as they tried to find the winning goal.

Then, in the 72nd minute, freshman Meredith Brown took advantage of a defensive miscue by New Bern to score from close range to put the Caps up 2-1.

Cutler had to make another save in the 76th minute, but Broughton held on for the victory to stay undefeated at 4-0. The Caps will next play on Monday, March 30, against Millbrook in a Cap 8 conference match-up.

Following the game, Brown was honored as Broughton's recipient of The Brittany Sportsmanship Award. Congratulations, Meredith, and huge props to the organizers of The Brittany. It was great for Broughton to be part of such a wonderful event again. Go Caps!

CAPS SEND MESSAGE TO CAP 8 - WE'RE BACK!

The Broughton Caps women's soccer team, ranked 15th in this week's Eurosport rankings, took the pitch Wednesday night against conference rival Leesville Road Pride, ranked 7th, and sent a message to the rest of the Cap 8 early in the campaign - we're back!  The Caps got the result 2-0 and now sit at 3-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.  On top of that, the Caps defense is in top form as senior goal keeper and future Furman Paladin, Allie Cutler, has 3 clean sheets.  Broughton's side dominated possession from the kick-off moving the ball consistently through its attacking third, but unable to score.  The Caps best chance looked to be a goal line shot saved by Leesville's goal keeper Shannon Hardy in the 32nd minute.  However, in the waning seconds of the first period junior Emma Willard added to her account.  Freshman Meredith Brown fired a shot from 25 yards out that deflected off the frame Willard was there to fire the deflection into the back of the net!  The Caps continued its reign over possession in the second period.  The Pride almost equalized in the 41st minute, but Cutler made a point blank save.  The sides battled on and in the 50th minute junior Sarah Grace Lasso opened her account when she gathered a pass from junior Lily Schneider, made a touch to her left, drew the keeper over and fired a low shot to the far post to put the Caps up 2-0!  Schneider was credited with the assist.  The Caps held on the remaining 30 minutes battling a very good and aggressive Leesville team.  The Caps return to action Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in a non-conference contest against New Bern High School in The Brittany Classic in Wilson.

CAPS BEGIN CAP 8 1-0!

Junior Emma Willard opened her account Monday night as the Broughton women's soccer team began the 2015 campaign 2-0 and began conference play 1-0 with a 3-0 defeat of Wake Forest High School.  Willard started what would end on the night as a "hat trick" in the 4th minute of play when she received a pass from fellow junior Sarah Grace Lasso and put her shot in the back of the net to put the Caps up 1-0.  Lasso was credited with the assist by official team statistics guru, Jeff Cutler. Willard was not done for the night and 4 minutes later, in the 8th minute, she received another pass from Lasso in the midfield and dribbled her way through the weak Cougar defense before firing in her second goal of the evening.  The Caps supporters thought Willard decided to share the wealth in the 30th minute when junior Julia Stephens slotted one in past the goal keeper, but the assistant referee thought differently, and flagged her offside.  The Caps continued the offensive attack in the second half while the Caps solid defense kept the Cougars at bay.  The Wake Forest goal keeper was busy throughout the night fending off the Caps and in 42nd minute stopped what was a sure goal off a well place Caps corner kick.  Finally, the Caps put the match out of reach in the 76th minute when Willard completed her night with her 3rd goal.  Senior goal keeper Allie Cutler kept her second clean sheet of the season.  The Caps, ranked 15th in this week's Eurosport 4A poll, welcome 7th ranked conference foe Leesville Road High School to campus Wednesday night.  As always, JV begins at 4:30 with the varsity clash set for a 6:30 kick-off.  Come out and support the Caps!

CAPS OPEN SEASON WITH VICTORY!

Coach Kelly Mastin's Broughton women's soccer team opened the 2015 campaign with a 1-0 victory over a previously unbeaten Holly Springs Golden Hawks side.  The Caps took the pitch after two weeks of weather delayed try-outs and cancellation of games against Athens Drive High School and East Chapel Hill High School, but the Caps supporters could not tell that the delay had any effect on the Caps, as they took it to the Golden Hawks from the start.  Broughton possessed much of the first half and pressured the Holly Springs defense in the attacking third.  In the 31st minute junior Sarah Grace Lasso connected with freshman Meredith Brown who cracked a beautiful shot from approximately 36 yards past the Golden Hawks' keeper into the ole' onion bag for Broughton's first goal of the season!  The Caps took the lead into halftime and came out and continued to possess the ball and pressure the defense in the second 40 minutes of play.  Broughton controlled the defensive third anchored by senior Allie Cutler in goal to complete victory.  The Caps return to the pitch on Monday when the Cougars of Wake Forest High School come to town.  JV kicks off at 4:30 with Varsity to follow at 6:30.
