Men Divers Dominate

At the CAP 8 conference diving championships this evening, Broughton boys swamped the competition.  Holt Gray took home the title for the second year in a row.  Bennett Butler took 4th and Jacob Wells took 5th. No other team came close to scoring as many points.  Next up is Regionals on Friday of next week. Our boys are seeded very well and hope to place in the top 8 at regionals, thus qualifying for the State Championships.

Unfortunately none of our girl divers scored in the conference meet.

Caps Wrestling Enters Post Season with Momentum

Broughton wrestling went 2-1 this week to cap off the regular season as the team heads into the post season.  Last week at Enloe, the Caps pulled out the victory with a dramatic pin in the very last match of the dual. Junior Jasper Lassiter, giving up around 60 lbs. in the 285lb weight class reversed his opponent, stuck him for the pin, and sealed a winning record in the Cap 8 conference regular season. The N&O wrote about the win here.

On Wednesday night, Broughton honored senior Jack Elliott as well as former Captain Lamont Burt who tragically passed away over the summer. After a hard-fought loss to Cap 8 rival Heritage, the Caps came out inspired for their second match of the evening versus West Johnston coached by former Broughton assistant coach, Charles Blumell. Head Coach Stan Chambers and his staff apparently lit a fire under the boys as they competed with passion in their last home match of the season. The Caps trounced the Wildcats 47-28 to finish the dual season 4-3 in the Cap 8 and 10-8 overall.

Individual Highlights:

  • As a rookie to the sport, Dominick Ashford (120 lbs) finished the regular varsity season with a winning record.
  • Soph. Nic Valdespino (126 lbs) went 3-0 running his record to 29-4.
  • Senior Jack Elliott (132 lbs) picked up his 11th win on the year.
  • Soph. Patrick Maxwell (145/152lb) picked up his 10th win on the year.
  • Soph. Nash Philbeck (145 lbs) went 3-0 with three pins to run his record to 25-5.
  • Soph. Christian Hite (170 lbs) won his 20th match on the year.
  • Jr. Andrew Maxwell (182 lbs) won two matches this week and got his 13th season victory.
  • Jr. Jasper Lassiter (220 lbs.) won two matches including the dramatic pin vs. Enloe.

The Caps will compete in the Cap 8 conference individual tournament this weekend at Sanderson and then the 4A Mideast Regional with those who qualify on February 12-13 at Cary.

Wrestling: Another Cap 8 W and Boneyard Podium

Broughton's wrestling team dug a hole for themselves last night at Wakefield but roared back as Senior Jack Elliott's pin midway through the meet was the turning point. Down 33-18, the Caps rattled off 7 match wins in a row to pull out a 44-33 victory over the Cap 8 rival Wolverines. Broughton's record in the conference moves to 3-2. In the win column for the Caps were Nic Valdespino (126 lb), Jack Elliott (132), Michael Knott (138), Nash Philbeck (145), Patrick Maxwell (152), Quadeek Hines (160), Christian Hite (170), and Jasper Lassiter (220).

Last weekend, Broughton sent 4 of its varsity wrestlers to compete in the meatgrinder Boneyard Bash individual tournament at Jack Britt High School in Fayetteville. Nash Philbeck avenged a previous season loss by beating Panther Creek's Miles Kent in the semi-finals to get to the finals in the 145 lb. weight class. Nash placed second losing only by minor decision to Cary's #1 ranked undefeated and returning state champ, Kollin Wade. Nash's season record is now 19-4 and he is ranked #8 in 4A at 145 lbs.

Nic Valdespino pinned his way to the semi-finals where he faced 3A #1 undefeated Harrison Campbell from West Brunswick. After a tight 4-2 loss vs. Campbell, Nic fought back to win the consolation bracket to place 3rd. Nic's record now stands at 22-4 and he is ranked #9 in 4A at 126 lbs.

Christian Hite picked up two huge wins to reach the semi finals as well. Christian placed 6th in the Boneyard and now has 16 wins on the season wrestling at 170 lbs.

The Caps are at Southern Durham Saturday at the Spartan 300 dual tournament and face Enloe in a Cap 8 dual meet on Thursday.
