Broughton begins season with 3-3 tie against Middle Creek

The Lady Caps opened the season Monday night with a rough-and-tumble 3-3 draw against the visiting Middle Creek Mustangs.

Broughton started the game strong, controlling possession and keeping the ball in the attacking third for most of the first 20 minutes of the first half. But the Caps were unable to convert on a few scoring chances, sending balls high, wide or directly at the Middle Creek keeper.

The Caps keeper, senior Eliza Taylor, made a nice save on Middle Creek's first scoring opportunity in the 25th minute. But a couple of minutes later, Middle Creek put the ball in the back of the net to get on the scoreboard first.

Broughton responded promptly, with senior Emma Willard bouncing a ball off the cross bar and into the goal a couple of minutes later.

With the score tied 1-1 at the half, both teams came out aggressively in the second half. Taylor made another save six minutes into the half, sparking an immediate counter attack that forced the Middle Creek keeper to leap to tip a Willard shot over the goal.

But Middle Creek reclaimed the lead with a shot in the 54th minute that took a funny bounce as it skidded into the goal.

The second half was more of a back-and-forth affair than the first half, with both teams struggling to maintain possession. There was also plenty of physical play, with one Middle Creek player being issued a yellow card and two Broughton players leaving the field with injuries.

The play swung back in Broughton's direction in the 63rd minute when senior Kelly Ann Evans stroked a shot (to quote our former correspondent) into the back of the old onion bag to tie the score at 2-2.

Less than four minutes later, though, Middle Creek struck again to reclaim the lead at 2-3. Then, in the 74th minute, junior Savannah Jones drew a penalty in the box after making an aggressive attack from the left side. Sophomore Meredith Brown converted the penalty kick to tie the score at 3-3.

Both teams had shots that barely missed in the game's closing minutes as the season opener for both teams ended in a 3-3 draw.

Earlier, the Broughton junior varsity defeated Middle Creek 2-0 on two goals by sophomore Anne Lassiter Barnes.

Wrestling Qualifies Two for States with Runner-up Finishes at Regionals

Led by underclassmen, Broughton wrestling showed it has the nucleus to be a force to reckon with for years to come. Sophomores Nic Valdespino and Nash Philbeck both rolled through a bracket of upperclassmen to each reach the finals in their respective weight classes at the 4A Mideast Region Wrestling Championship on Saturday at Cary High School. Both wrestlers fell in the finals only by minor decision and qualified for the 4A NCHSAA State Championship to be held this weekend at the Greensboro Coliseum. Only the top four finishers per weight class in each of the state's four regions qualify for states.

Another core contributor, Sophomore Christian Hite battled back through the consolation bracket after a controversial DQ in the opening round to valiantly find himself one win away from qualifying for states. Jasper Lassiter and Jack Elliott rounded out Broughton's presence at Regionals, wrestling tough matches and representing the Caps with pride.
