The Lady Caps soccer team lost its conference opener Wednesday night at Leesville, 1-3, but not before giving the undefeated Pride a scare in the second half.
Leesville got on the scoreboard early, with a goal in the third minute. But Broughton regained its composure with a couple of scoring chances later in the half. Senior keeper Eliza Taylor kept the Caps in the game with a nice save on a Leesville corner kick in the final seconds of the first half.
Leesville also struck first in the second half, with a goal in the 51st minute to take an 0-2 lead.
But the Caps came roaring back, forcing the Leesville keeper to make a scrambling save on a breakaway opportunity a couple of minutes later. The Caps got on the scoreboard - the first goal scored against Leesville this season - in the 55th minute when sophomore Abby Manring was in the perfect position in front of the goal to tap in a great cross by senior Sarah Grace Lasso.
The Broughton defense, led by seniors Kelly Ann Evans and Julia Stevens, repelled repeated attacks by Leesville. Taylor also contributed with several saves late in the second half.
But Leesville managed to score one last goal, with just a couple of minutes left in the game, off a free kick after Broughton was called for a foul.
Earlier, the Broughton junior varsity team earned a 2-1 win thanks to goals by Anne Lassiter Barnes and Maria Scharfe.
