The Broughton girls’ lacrosse team defeated the Chapel Hill Tigers 16-12 Tuesday night to advance to the state quarterfinals.
Senior Hattie Warner led the Caps with seven goals, in a tightly contested game, which featured four lead changes. “Harder teams raise the level of play,” Hattie commented after the game. “There was a higher intensity level tonight. As a senior, I want to play as hard as I can.”
The Tigers opened an early 3-0 lead, only to be tied 5-5 with Farrell Guest’s second goal at 6:52 in the first half. The Caps held a narrow 7-6 lead at half, and finally began to distance themselves from the Tigers with a 15-10 lead with five minutes left in the game.
Rounding out the scoring for the Caps were Farrell Guest (2), EJ Fuller (2), Carol Seigler (2), Leaha Renee Burgess (1), Marcy Waters (1), and Margaret Anne Warner (1). Marcy Waters, a standout all year on defense, took the ball the length of the field at 18:19 in the second half to give the Caps a lead they never relinquished.
Broughton continues play in the quarterfinals of state playoffs this Friday night at home against conference rival Wakefield, with whom the Caps split their two games this year.
