The Capitals downed two of North Carolina's most successful programs on Saturday to open the 2016 season. Broughton defeated Providence (3-1) 18-25, 27-25, 25-23, 25-14 in the day's first contest. The Panthers are led by new coach Brian Rosen who coached Charlotte Country Day to NCISAA 3A state titles in 2013 and 2014. The Caps beat Ardrey Kell in the day's second match 25-16, 25-13, 21-25, 25-13. The Knights are coached by Zoe Bell who won her 600th game in their first match of the day against Apex. Coach Bell directed Providence teams to four NCHSAA 4A state championships during her time there.
Broughton got off to a slow start in dropping the day's first set but improved serve receive helped the Caps even the match by claiming a tightly contested second stanza. Providence led 23-18 in the third set but Jade Demps (6-2 Freshman OH) reeled off seven straight service points (including three aces) to give Broughton a 2-1 lead. The Caps were paced by Kalee Vanderhorst's 24 kills (.340) and 14 digs and Jade Demps tallied 20 kills (.444) and 6 aces in her first varsity contest. Claire Sawyer handed out 50 assists and had 4 digs. Grace Youngblood collected 5 kills and Peyton Kendall and Nan Parrish each added 3 kills. Amber Russell and Holli Smith each pounded out 3 aces and Smith and Alden Willis each scooped up 7 digs. Carly Peck led Providence with 12 kills (.391) and Ashley Cruise added 10 kills (.316) and 3 blocks. Emily Konchan recorded 32 assists and Macy Henry had 14 digs.
Broughton jumped to a 2-0 lead in Saturday's second tilt before the Knights rebounded to claim the third stanza. Peyton Kendall's kill ended the fourth set and gave the Caps a 2-0 start to their season. Kalee Vanderhorst had a match-high 20 kills (.275), 17 digs and 3 aces and Jade Demps piled up 17 kills (.361), 6 digs and 2 blocks. Claire Sawyer posted 41 assists, 5 digs and 2 aces and Amber Russell chipped in 15 digs and 2 aces. Holli Smith had a match-high 4 aces and 9 digs and Alden Willis picked up 7 digs. Nan Parrish added 4 kills and Peyton Kendall and Grace Youngblood each chipped in 2 kills. Sylvia Duggan paced Ardrey Kell (3-1) with 18 kills and 7 digs and Ella Duggan posted a match-high 21 digs. Maddie Sweeney had 18 assists, 6 kills and 2 blocks.
Broughton travels to Holly Springs (3-0) on Monday. Game times are 5:00 (JV) and 6:00 (V).
