In a game featuring two of the top five teams in the N&O rankings, the #5 Broughton Capitals (4-0-1) came from behind to defeat the #3 Apex Cougars be a score of 3-2 in the second round of the Wake County Cup. With this victory, the Caps have advanced to play #1 Green Hope in the Cup finals on Saturday, September 24th at Cardinal Gibbons High School.
Broughton took the lead in the first half as Junior Donovan Nicholson found Freshman Edson Candela-Perez to make it 1-0. The Caps continued to dominate play and shots from Andrew Rossetti, Cesar Gonzalez and Edson Candela-Perez kept the Apex keeper extremely busy in the first 40 minutes.
Apex, however, scored at the end of the first half and then took a 2-1 lead 7 minutes into the second half.
At that point, the boys settled down and took control again with Sophomore Andrew Rossetti getting his second goal in two games to tie the score up. Then with 10 minutes to play, Senior Graham Gunter played a long ball to Andrew Rossetti who played a well-timed cross into the run of Senior Abdulle Ibrahim who coolly finished to put the Caps up for good. The defense then held off some furious charges from the Cougars with Lucas Beeson, Esteban Noyola-Perez, Jacob Hill and Lex Varani heading crosses into the box away.
The Caps next play on Monday at Clayton (2-2).
PS - Peter Gwaltney is working on getting some photos to me from the first few games and I'll dedicate an entire post to putting some of the best ones up.
