The Broughton soccer team (3-0-1) rebounded from a tough draw against Cary Monday night to dominate a young, but talented Garner team 8-0 in the first round of the Wake County Cup.
In a game played at South Garner Stadium, the Caps scored early and often and led at halftime by a score of 4-0. Freshman Edson Candela-Perez started the scoring off an assist by Jack Ashby. That was followed by Sophomore Lucas Beeson heading home a ball from Jacob Hill. Cesar Gonzalez had a great individual goal to make it 3-0 and then – with just four minutes left before halftime – Sophomore Andrew Rossetti beat two Garner defenders to score the Caps last goal of the half.
The second half was much like the first and Senior Sam Stein drew and then finished the PK to make it 5-0. Alexis Santos then tapped in the rebound off Cesar’s free kick and the game was put out of all doubt. Abdulle Ibrahim and Stephen Holloman finished off the Trojans with goals in the 62nd and 72nd minutes to firm up the 8-0 victory.
Defenders Esteban Salinas Noyola, Jacob Hill, Lex Varani, Ivey O’Brien and Duncan Coffey led the back line who thwarted all chances by the strong Garner attack and Sophomore Ryan Meredith did well to ensure the clean sheet.
Broughton must regroup for the second round Wake County Cup matchup against the always strong Apex in a game played at 4:30P at Broughton. Please come out and support the team.(by Christian Rossetti)
