Volleyball Closes Out Non-Conference Play With Home Win

Broughton (5-0) downed visiting Middle Creek (2-3) 25-17, 25-18, 25-8 on Monday night in Raleigh. The Mustangs jumped out to a 17-12 advantage in the opening frame before Nan Parrish collected 3 kills in a 6-0 run to give the Caps a 18-17 lead. Amber Russell reeled off 12 consecutive service points to close the set.  The Caps started fast in the second stanza and took a 8-1 lead before Middle Creek battled back to eventually close to within three points at 19-16.  Kalee Vanderhorst had two kills and an ace to spark a 4-1 run that pushed the host's lead to 23-17 and Claire Sawyer's ace ended the set.  Jade Demps' kill gave the Capitals a 8-5 lead to start the third game and sparked a 13-0 service run by Alden Willis.  A kill by Peyton Kendall punctuated the streak making it 20-5 and another Vanderhorst kill ended the match.

Kalee Vanderhorst posted 13 kills (.241), 10 digs, 3 aces and 2 blocks and Jade Demps tallied 12 kills (.360) and 3 digs.  Peyton Kendall added 6 kills (.333), Nan Parrish had 4 kills and Grace Youngblood chipped in 3 kills.  Claire Sawyer recorded 32 assists, 4 digs, 2 blocks and 2 aces and Alden Willis had team-high 4 aces and 10 digs.  Amber Russell added 11 digs and 2 aces and Holli Smith scooped up a team-high 15 digs.

Broughton opens Cap-8 play at Wakefield this Thursday (4:30/5:30).  The Wolverines defeated Hough to win the 2013 NCHSAA 4A state championship and currently feature Duke University recruit Ade Owokiniran (6-2 Jr. MB).
