Volleyball Opens Cap-8 Play With Win at Wakefield

The Caps (6-0, 1-0) downed host Wakefield (3-3, 1-0) 25-13, 25-20, 25-23 on Thursday night in the Cap-8 opener for both squads.  In the first frame kills by Kalee Vanderhorst and Jade Demps pushed Broughton to a 12-9 advantage. Another Vanderhorst kill stretched the margin to 18-11 and the Capitals closed the set with a 7-2 run.  The Wolverines knotted the second stanza at 10-10 before four aces from Alden Willis sparked a 6-0 spurt to give the visitors a 16-10 lead.  A kill by Vanderhorst and an ace by Demps made it 20-12. A block by Grace Youngblood and Peyton Kendall ended a 5-0 run by Wakefield that had pulled them to 20-17.  Kills by Demps and Vanderhorst accounted for Brougton's final two points of the set.  Grace Youngblood's kill gave the Caps a 3-1 lead to begin the third game but Wakefield tied things up at 7-7. A block by Nan Parrish and Claire Sawyer sparked a 9-3 burst by Broughton that swelled their lead to 16-10 after an ace by Holli Smith. A 5-0 run by Wakefield was brought to a halt by a kill from Vanderhorst and a block from Vanderhorst and Sawyer to make the score 18-15. The Wolverines pushed back and took a 23-22 lead before another Vanderhorst kill drew the Caps even.  Jade Demps pounded out two straight aces to end the match.

Kalee Vanderhorst led Broughton with a match-high 19 kills (.471) and six digs and Jade Demps tallied 8 kills (.471), 6 digs and a match-high 5 aces. Grace Youngblood posted 6 kills (.308) and 2 blocks and Nan Parrish posted 2 blocks and a kill.  Claire Sawyer collected 32 assists, 2 blocks and Alden Willis added 4 aces and 5 digs. Holli Smith scooped up 4 digs and posted a team-high 2.3 serve receive average (3.0 scale).  Ade Owokinarin led Wakefield with 9 kills and Gabbi Ingram added 3 aces and 3 blocks.  Erin McEneny dished out 11 assists and Gentry Benda posted 3 kills, 2 aces and 7 assists.

Broughton continues Cap-8 play next Tuesday at Enloe before returning home to face Heritage on Thursday.
