The 2016-17 season for our Broughton Men's Basketball team has kicked-off to a 2-0 start with solid wins over SE Raleigh and Cary.  This has been particularly encouraging considering the fact that this year's team is very young.  Jack Holloway (Team Captain) and Jimbo Stanley are the team's only Seniors.

The hallmark of this team has been teamwork and balance.  The team has 4 players averaging double-digits in scoring (Jack Holloway, Jessup Lowe, Carson McCorkle and Tyler Palmer).  Clearly, another key to these first two wins has been the performance of Junior Jalen Finch.  Jalen's well-rounded stat line includes 8 ppg, 5 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 4.5 steals.

The team has one more game before the Thanksgiving break.  Come out and see the Caps take on Green Hope Tuesday night, the 22nd at 7pm.  Hope to see you there!

Go Caps!

Caps Lose 3-2 to #3 East Wake to Finish the Season

In a game that saw #11 Broughton go 3-0 down early into the second half, the Caps never stopped fighting and scored two goals in the last 45 seconds to come out on the wrong end of a 3-2 game. The loss ends the season with a 15-7-2 record for the boys.

Despite our having beaten the Warriors in the first game of the season, it was East Wake who came out aggressively and looked all the part of a #3 seed. They played to their strengths (height and long throw-ins) and scored two goals in the first 25 minutes.  The Caps really only had one chance from Freshman Edson Candela-Perez that went over the bar.  We were lucky to get out of the first half only down 2.

The Caps came out strong in the second half and had several good chances from Cesar Gonzalez, Lucas Beeson and Abdulle Ibrahim - but just couldn't get past the East Wake GK.  East Wake then, with 20 minutes to play, scored what turned out to be the winning goal to go up 3-0.  However, there was no quit in our boys, and Broughton dominated the last 20 minutes while the Warriors sat back to defend. Andrew Rossetti had double digit long throws into the box that we could just not put home.

Finally, with less than a minute left, the pressure paid off as Andrew took a pass from Cesar and played an excellent cross to the feet of Lucas who scored to make it 1-3 (VIDEO).

Then, not 20 seconds later, Senior captains Esteban Salinas-Noyola and Graham Gunter combined on a long throw-in and header to make it 2-3 (VIDEO).

With only 10 seconds left after that goal, East Wake simply kicked the kickoff out of bounds and the ball game ended.

It has been a great year for the team and I'll send out a recap later to highlight the season and why there should be a tremendous amount of optimism for the future. Go Caps Go!

Caps Soccer Upsets #6 Cardinal Gibbons to Advance to Second Round

What a game.

In their best performance of the season, the #11 Broughton Capitals (15-6-2) played with passion and composure and comfortably defeated the #6 Crusaders from Cardinal Gibbons by a score of 4-2.  This victory moves the Caps on to the second round of the playoffs to face #3 East Wake Warriors in Wendell on Tuesday.

The first half was dominated by Broughton from the opening whistle and their pressure paid off as Junior Cesar Gonzalez played a free kick to the head of Senior Joe Ruslander who headed it home to make it 1-0. (VIDEO)

Just a few minutes later, the boys made it 2-0 as Andrew Rossetti took a long pass and played it right to the foot of Lucas Beeson whose shot deflected off a defender but was always headed to the back of net. (VIDEO)

Broughton continued their pressure and Donovan Nicholson had a shot hit off the post.  Then, in what seemed like their only chance of the first half, Gibbons played a through ball for a goal and that made the halftime score 2-1.

The second half started strong for Gibbons and only thanks to the efforts of Sophomore GK Ryan Meredith and the back line of Esteban, Lex, Jacob, Graham, Ivey, Joe and Duncan did keep the score at 2-1.  About 20 minutes into the second half, Broughton got what turned out to be the winning goal as Andrew's corner kick was perfectly headed home by Sophomore Bryce Meredith to give the Caps the 3-1 advantage.

The Crusaders then scored off a free kick which was caused by the worst foul call ever in a HS soccer game.  Coach Brannan seemed to agree...

However, with only 10 minutes to play in the match, Sophomore Andrew Rossetti was fouled in the box and slotted home the PK to give the Caps their final goal and the 4-2 victory. (VIDEO)

This victory was a total team effort by the boys and we'll need to continue this good play to make a run in the 4A Playoffs.
