Men's Hoops Play in the John Wall Holiday Invitational

Our Men's Basketball team will tip off tomorrow, the 27th, at 5:10pm versus Cox Mill out of Concord, NC in the John Wall Holiday Invitational.  The tournament is hosted at our own Holliday Gym. Cox Mill features Wendell Moore, one of the top 50 Sophomores in the nation.

Considering the Caps returned no starters coming into this season, and only have 2 Seniors on the roster, our boys have gotten off to a pretty good start.  They currently sit at 7-3 overall, and 2-2 in the Cap 8.

Please come out and support our basketball team during the tournament. Go Caps!

Varsity Soccer - Year in Review

The Broughton Capitals Men's Soccer will be celebrating their season tonight at the soccer banquet.  It was a roller coaster of a season as:

  • The Caps started strong and were ranked as high as #3 in the News & Observer
  • Went through a tough stretch that saw them lose 5 of 8 games
  • Finished on a high note by getting 13 points in their last 5 games, moving up to 4th in the Cap-8 and upsetting the #6 seed in the HS Playoffs.

Some of the season highlights:

August 17th: Junior Lev Varani's tying goal and Junior Jack Ashby's winning goal in the minute to defeat Knightdale 3-2

August 25th: Caps defeat Apex 3-2 to advance to the finals of the Wake County Cup

September 10th: Broughton dominates the then #2 ranked Middle Creek Mustangs 5-2 in the Cap-8/SWAC Festival

September 19th: Sophomore Andrew Rossetti scores 2, including the game winner as Broughton defeats first place Millbrook (at Millbrook) 4-2

September 28th: In a rain shortened game, Freshman Edson Candela-Perez scores both goals in a 2-1 victory at Enloe

October 17th: Sophomore Lucas Beeson heads home a long throw from Andrew Rossetti and we earn a draw at second place Sanderson 1-1.  Sophomore Ryan Meredith makes eleventy billion saves (or it felt like it).  It was from this game on that we didn't lose again until the second round of the playoffs.

October 24th: Senior Night - Senior Graham Gunter sets up Senior Abdulle Ibrahim for a 20-yard volley to give the Caps the 3-2 OT victory over Enloe.

October 26th: The Caps come from behind to move into fourth place in the Cap-8 as Senior Jacob Hill ties it up in the first half, and after trailing again, Edson Candela-Perez ties it up again and Andrew Rossetti wins it in the second half.

Game of the Year: November 5th: Broughton plays its best, most complete game of the season to upset Cardinal Gibbons 4-2.  Goals by Senior Joe Ruslander, Lucas Beeson, Sophomore Bryce Meredith and Andrew Rossetti seal the victory for the Caps.

Lastly, here is some optimism for the next few years for the Caps:

  • We return the leading Freshman scorer for the Cap-8 (Edson Candela-Perez)
  • We return the leading Sophomore scorer for the Cap-8 (Andrew Rossetti)
  • We return one of 3 players who was All Conference in his 9th/10th grade seasons (Lucas Beeson)
  • We return 5 of our 6 leading scorers (Candela-Perez, Rossetti, Nicholson, Beeson, Gonzalez)
  • We return both GK's (Meredith & Oxford) and have another excellent one in 9th Grade
  • We return 8 of the 11 starters in our last playoff game

Good luck to all the boys who are playing club ball right now and for those seniors listed above: thank you.

Until next year - Go Caps!
