Of the 25 4A high schools in the Mid-East Region, only the top 16 wrestlers in each weight class qualify for the Regional tournament. On Friday and Saturday, the boys competed in a bracket of 16 wrestlers in their respective weight class.
Nash Philbeck, (30-4) emerged as a Regional Champion at 145 lbs. after taking out #2 state-ranked Delante Robinson of Cary in the finals. Nash dominated his opponent who was previously undefeated at 40-0 form start to finish as Nash's relentless pace and unpredictability were too much for the Cary wrestler.
Christian Hite, (29-6) went a perfect 4-0- to also become a Regional Champ at 160 lbs. Christian won his finals match-up against #10 state-ranked Hunter Yost of Holly Springs in an exciting sudden-victory overtime match where Christian's patience and gas tank won the day.
Braxton May-Nicholson, (29-3) went 2-0 on his way to the Region finals in the 152 lbs. bracket. Braxton defeated #4 ranked Sherriff Njie of Heritage 12-5 in the semi-finals to advance to the championship match where he dropped a close decision to #2 ranked Nate Kinsey of Cary.
Nic Valdespino, (28-5) won his first 3 matches taking out #8 ranked Logan Perentis of Holly Springs in the semi-finals of the 132 lbs class. This match was also a sudden victory overtime thriller where Nic finished a shot on the edge of the mat to win. Nic dropped the finals match to #5 ranked Dan Mills of Leesville.
Andrew Maxwell and Patrick Maxwell, also were regional qualifiers and competed for the Caps with pride. The NCHSAA State Championship Tournament is Thursday-Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum.
