Both the men’s and women’s swimming teams performed well at the North Carolina 4A State Championships held Friday at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary. The teams were led by Jack Messenger, who won two state championships, set one state record, set two school records, was named All-American in two events, and was named MVP of the meet.
The women’s team finished 13th in the State. Maria Baric took 2nd in the 50 free, setting a new school record and making an All-American consideration time. She also took 6th in the breaststroke. Genna Brewer took 9th in the 50 free. The 200 free relay consisting of Genna Brewer, Alex Smalto, Stella Kempf, and Maria Baric took 9th and set a new school record. The same group took 16th in the 400 free relay.
The men’s team finished 10th in the state. Jack Messenger won both the 50 free and the 100 free with automatic All-American times. (Having won the 100 freestyle in 2016, he now has back to back championships in that event.) Jack set new school records in both events and set a new state record in the 100 free with a time of 44.64. Smith Moran took 11th in the 500 free. The 400 free relay consisting of Richie Soltis, Smith Moran, David Washburn, and Jack Messenger took 10th and set a new school record. It was a thrilling end to a great season.
