There were plenty of new faces on the field for the Caps, who lost 11 players from last year's team to graduation. Head Coach Craig Brannan, who is also new to the team, found playing time in the non-conference match-up for all 23 players on the roster.
It took the Caps a while to get warmed up on a chilly evening, but Brown got the scoring started in the 11th minute when she finished off a pass from senior captain Savannah Jones.
Broughton dominated possession throughout the game, and senior defender Liza Cozart made a nice one-on-one defensive play to break up one of Rolesville's few threats of the Caps' goal to preserve the 1-0 lead.

Rolesville struck less than two minutes into the second half to get on the scoreboard and then managed to hold off the Broughton attack for several minutes. But Brown finished off her hat trick in the 52nd minute when she scored on a penalty kick after Rolesville was called for a handball in the box.
Gilchrist scored her second goal of the night, in the 65th minute, to put the Caps up 5-1. Sophomore Sara Hanna Fortier assisted on the goal.
Junior keeper Taina Maisonet made two saves, both on shots off of a corner kick in the 69th minute, to keep the score at 5-1.
Fortier then scored with a little over two minutes remaining in the game and Gilchrist notched her hat trick with just 26 seconds left on the clock to make the final score 7-1.
The Caps are out of action until a week from Friday, when they travel to Wilson to face Jacksonville in the Brittany Classic.
Earlier Thursday, the junior varsity team also started its season with a win over Rolesville, scoring three goals in each half for a 6-0 shutout. Kaia Beeson and Lynde Flanders each scored two goals, while Kate Lewis and Hallie Worth each added a goal.
