Broughton records 2-1 win over Sanderson

Broughton found the back of the net twice Wednesday night to earn a 2-1 victory over the visiting Sanderson Spartans.

The Caps struck first, in the 13th minute, when junior Anne Lassiter Barnes streaked up the middle of the field to finish off a pass from junior Meredith Brown and put Broughton up 1-0. Meanwhile, the Caps played another strong defensive game, limiting Sanderson to just a couple of scoring chances in the first half.

With the Caps holding on to a slim 1-0 lead to begin the second half, freshman keeper Sydney Spoor stretched out to deflect a Sanderson shot in the 49th minute that appeared to be on target.

Broughton managed to build on its lead when sophomore Sara Hanna Fortier scored on a breakaway in the 57th minute. Junior Maggie Gall had the assist.

Sanderson tacked on a goal in the 76th minute to narrow the margin, but the Caps were able to hold the Spartans off in the final minutes of the game to secure the 2-1 conference victory.

Earlier, the junior varsity suffered a 1-2 loss to Sanderson despite controlling possession for much of the game. Sanderson scored first, about 10 minutes into the game, but the Caps tied it up on a goal by Lynde Flanders from a cross by Mary Martha Stokes. Sanderson went ahead 1-2 on a goal about midway through the second half.

Next up is Wake Forest, which visits Broughton tonight.
