Caps earn shutout victory over Athens Drive

Broughton posted its third win of the young season -- and its first shutout of the season -- with a 2-0 non-conference victory over Athens Drive on Thursday night.

The Caps continued their strong defensive play, with freshman keeper Sydney Spoor making key saves on the few occasions when the visiting Jaguars managed to get off a shot. Meanwhile, Broughton got on the scoreboard about midway through the first half when freshman Elizabeth Gilchrist scored off a pass from junior Maggie Gall.

Broughton had other opportunities to add to their total in the second half, but were thwarted by several nice saves by the keeper for Athens Drive (including a diving block of a shot by sophomore Ava Neijna that was headed for the upper corner of the goal).

The Caps did add another goal, midway through the second half, when Gall buried a deflected shot by junior Anne Lassiter Barnes.

Earlier, the junior varsity continued its winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Athens Drive. Even though Broughton controlled time of possession, the two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half. The Caps continued to control play in the second half, but Athens Drive took advantage of a breakaway to record the game's first goal.

The Caps came roaring back, though, with Hallie Worth heading in a corner by Ashton Kendall to tie the score. Then Worth and Kendall combined again, with Worth finishing off a cross into the box by Kendall, sealing the 2-1 win for Broughton.
