Caps Men's Soccer Loses to #1 in US Cardinal Gibbons

In a game that was as close as the score indicates, the Broughton Capitals (7-4, 1-3) shook off the cobwebs and fought the #1 Ranked team in the United States by MaxPreps - Cardinal Gibbons to a 1-2 loss at home.

Broughton came out strong and put several chances together early on featuring the front line of Ahmed Magoub, Andrew Rossetti and John White.

Senior Captain Clay Oxford made an amazing save on a breakaway to keep the score 0-0.

The defense was stout as well led by Lex Varani and Duncan Coffey.  It looked like we were going to get to halftime at 0-0 but Gibbons scored on a free kick and we were down 0-1.

The first 25 minutes Gibbons proved why they are the #1 team in the US as they dominated possession and chances and scored a deserved second goal to make it 0-2.

However, the Caps then played their best soccer of the past few weeks and put pressure on Gibbons thanks to runs by Ivey O'Brien, Duncan Coffey and Omar Stallings.  The pressure paid off - but too late - as Omar scored on a header from Jack Eubank with less than a minute left and we lost 1-2.

A big thanks to the fans that showed up for the game:

It has been a long 9 days for the Caps who are now 0-4 in their last 4 games being outscored 2-7 in these games.  That said - the goal of making the playoffs is still achievable and start with taking care of business tonight - at home - v Sanderson.   Time to start a new streak - and the good kind.

Go Caps!

#2 Caps Soccer Suffer Another Tough Defeat 1-0

The goal drought continued for the #2 Caps (7-2, 1-2) as they suffered another 0-1 loss to a conference opponent - Leesville Road proving that the Cap-7 is the toughest 4A soccer conference in North Carolina.

The Caps started out strong again as Junior Andrew Rossetti hit the post with a header and then saw a pass to Junior John White stopped by a great save from the Leesville Road GK.  Then Junior Lucas Beeson tested the GK with a header and shot that was saved.  Senior Harrison Lee had maybe the best shot of the game from 20 yards out sail just high. Freshman Omar Stallings made several runs and put crosses into the box which couldn't find the targets.  Defensively, Junior GK Hector Martinez played a great first half and came out several times to stop Leesville chances.

The second half was much like this first and the Caps took the game to Leesville, but couldn't break through the 5 defenders and GK. Cesar, Andrew, Lucas, John and Omar again had chances that were either just wide or stopped by Leesville.  With 10 minutes to go, Leesville got a header goal in the box and that score remained unchanged giving us the L.

As frustrating as the loss was, the boys are playing well and are just missing that little bit to finish the games off as they should.  It is coming.

They play their last non-conference game of the season tonight at 6p versus Cary (who made it to the third round of the playoffs last year).  Please come out and support the Caps.

The Enloe Eagles came to the Broughton home courts and barely eeked out a victory over the Lady Caps 5-4. The showdown of the match was the #2 doubles court. Sophomore Katie Burroughs and Freshman Trevlyn Roberts overcame a 2-6 deficit to win 9-7! Simply awesome! Roberts and Junior Meg Hardesty fought hard but lost in tiebreakers in their respective #2 and #4 singles matches while Senior Elizabeth Bell won the #5 court in a tiebreaker. The Lady Caps travel to Leesville tomorrow to avenge the earlier season loss at home. Come out and support the Lady Caps tennis team!

#2 Caps Lose a Heart Breaker on Alumni Night

It was a bittersweet night at Broughton Stadium on Monday as the Caps (7-1, 1-1) welcomed back former alumni, but lost 0-1 on a free kick with 2 minutes to play.

The first half was a real battle between Broughton and Enloe with both teams having several good chances.  Senior Clay Oxford played an amazing game in the net and stopped several 1v1 breakaways with no margin for error.  The Caps did have one goal taken off the board for an off-sides on Cesar Gonzalez who had tapped home a cross from Freshman Omar Stallings. (It was the correct call)  Just before halftime, Junior Lucas Beeson was denied a header goal by the Enloe GK (and man of the match) and the score was 0-0 at halftime.

The second half was completely dominated by the Caps in every area except the most important one - the scoreboard.  Juniors John White and Andrew Rossetti had (and created) several chances that were denied by the Enloe GK and Senior Erik Johnsen had one that just missed off the left post.  With overtime looming, the Enloe #11 rifled a free kick home from the top of the box and we left with a L.

There are no moral victories in the Cap-7 this year, so we need to get 6 points from the next two games this week.  Tonight we travel to Leesville Road, last year's champs, to start a new winning streak.

Go Caps!!

Caps Football Splits with Rams

The JV football team travelled to Rolesville for the Thursday Night Lights with a 21-2 win. Their defense didn't allow  the Rams to get into the end zone. A safety was the only opportunity for Rolesville to get on the scoreboard.

The varsity team hosted the Rams Friday night with a 34-6 loss. Dalton Smith kicked two field goals to provide all of the Caps scoring.

This week is a bye for Broughton. The following week they will take on Southeast Raleigh for the first Cap-7 games of the season.

#2 Caps Soccer Moves to 7-0 with Shutout of SE Raleigh

In a game that features no shots on target for the opposition, the #2 Broughton Capitals (7-0, 1-0) started out the CAP-7 season strong with a 5-0 victory over SE Raleigh.

It took the Caps a few minutes to score as Senior Lex Varani and Juniors John White, Lucas Beeson and Andrew Rossetti each put shots on goal or hit the post in the first 15-20 minutes.  Finally, the deadlock was broken by Lucas Beeson who headed home a great corner kick from Senior Jack Ashby.  That was shortly followed by Freshman Omar Stallings' rocket to the top corner to make it 2-0.  Senior Ahmed Magoub then scored the next two, one off a rebound and the other from an assist by Scott Rostick and we were 4-0 at halftime.

The second half saw lots of fight from SE Raleigh and lots of playing time for many of the Caps.  Just like in the first half, the post was hit several times (Rossetti, Cesar Gonzalez) and headers were cleared off the line (Erik Johnsen).  Finally, with 5 minutes to go - John White got a deserved goal and the score ended 5-0.

Any time you shut out the other team - props must be sent to GK's: Clay Oxford, Hector Martinez and Sam Vlahoplus and the Defense: Lex Varani, Ewan Reynolds, Duncan Coffey, Ivey O'Brien, Logan Hunter, Dante Oliva, Laurits Peterson and Franklin Noyola.

Next week is the first real test for the Caps as we face:

Monday: H to Enloe (who is undefeated)
Wednesday: A to Leesville Road (last year's defending champs)
Thursday: H to Cary (advanced to third round of playoffs)

Time to go to work.  #skocaps

#2 Caps Soccer Dominates Middle Creek 9-0

In a game that was all Broughton from the opening whistle, the Caps (6-0, 0-0) used a six goal second half to mercy rule Middle Creek 9-0.

The Caps struck early and often as Senior Captain Jack Ashby curled in a beautiful free kick from just outside the 18 to make it 1-0.  After numerous chances, Senior Stephen Holloman crossed the ball into the box and Senior Erik Johnsen headed it home to make it 2-0.  Then, before the break, Junior Scott Rostick played a corner kick into the box which Junior John White one-timed it into the corner to make it 3-0 at halftime.

The second half, unbelievably, was better than the first and Jack Ashby got his second goal from a cross from Junior Andrew Rossetti.  Then, Andrew got his goal as he stole the pass from Middle Creek and beat the GK with his left foot to make it 5-0.  Then, Junior Captain Lucas Beeson took his turn with a great run and shot that was tapped home by Tzo to make it 6-0 and then Lucas got his goal to make it 7-0. The game ended with Senior Ahmed Magoub scoring off a great pass from Sophomore Laurits Sorensen and then Stephen Holloman scoring to close the game early at 9-0.

We are now ready for the Cap7 season opener this Wednesday (weather permitting) against SE Raleigh.  Please check the @broughtonsoccer twitter feed for any schedule changes.

#2 Caps Defeat Athens Drive 3-2 to Stay Undefeated

In a game that saw the #2 Caps (5-0, 0-0) start fast, struggle in the middle but finish strong, the Caps used a 2-0 second half to defeat Athens Drive 3-2 at home.

Broughton scored 5 minutes into the game as Freshman Omar Stallings headed home a great header from a Sophomore Jack Eubank cross to make it 1-0.  Unfortunately, from that point until the end of the first half, Athens Drive dominated the Caps and scored 2 goals to make the halftime score 1-2.

Coach Brannan's pep talk at halftime got the boys' attention and we took it to Athens Drive from the whistle to start the second period.  The constant pressure paid off as Junior Andrew Rossetti scored his team leading 6th goal off a cross from Omar to make 2-2 60 minutes into the game.  Then, with 10 minutes left, Omar played a nice ball again through the middle and Senior Cesar Gonzalez finished with a right footed shot into the top corner to cap the comeback and give us the W.

Starting this week, the Caps play at least 2 games a week for the rest of the season and begin conference play this week against SE Raleigh on Wednesday.  Before that, we play Middle Creek - at Middle Creek on Monday hoping to start 6-0 for the first time in a few years.
