Broughton Men's Soccer - Playoff Information (Friday Update)

We're going to pretend like the Millbrook game never happened and focus on preparations for the playoffs next week.

Broughton finished 12-7 overall and 6-6 in the Cap-7.  We played the last 2 weeks without our starting CB (Lex), MF (Lucas and Bryce) and Striker (Ahmed). There's hope we get Lucas, Bryce and Ahmed back for next week.

Because of how the NCHSAA is doing the playoffs completely based on your MaxPreps ranking, there really isn't a lot of guess work in the seeding. For review:

  • 7 conferences get an automatic bid
  • 4 conferences get a second automatic bid (and no runner up can be ahead of a conference champion
  • That leaves 13 at-large spots based entirely on your MaxPreps score - and no at-large can be ahead of a conference champion or qualifying runner up

Meaning that, eventhough the Caps finished 5th in the Cap-7, our strong non-conference start allows us to be the 3rd team from the conference to be placed in the brackets, ahead of Millbrook and Leesville Road.

So, as of the Friday morning update earlier today, the Caps would be the third at-large team and #14 seed overall in the playoffs.  There will be a Monday final update, but since no HS games will be played, there should be little to no change.

As of 10/27/17 9:00AM:

Broughton (#14) v Wakefield (#19) - at home for Broughton on Wednesday
Winner will play Heritage (#3) - away on Saturday

There will be further updates....

Caps Men's Soccer Snaps Losing Streak Against Sanderson

In their most important game of the season, Broughton (12-6, 6-5) utilized the depth of the roster and goals by John White & Andrew Rossetti to defeat Sanderson 3-1.

While the wind howled and the skies darkened, Junior John White kept his cool and almost single handedly put the Caps in the lead by making run after run down the left side, finally taking a pass from Erik Johnsen and going half the field to beat the Sanderson GK (for his 9th goal of the season) and make it 1-0.

After halftime, Broughton came out with more resolve than the Spartans and made it 3-0 off two Andrew Rossetti goals (his 11th and 12th of the season).  The first came off a scramble in the box from a long Jack Eubank free kick and then the second off a beautiful pass from John White.

Sanderson did pull one back but the Caps didn't let up and Scott Rostick and Carter Gasia both hit the post - or the score would have been worse. Special mention to Senior Ewan Reynolds who filled in for Lex in the back and played a great game.

As referenced above, all the news wasn't good, as it appears that Broughton will be without Lex Varani, Ahmed Magoub and Lucas Beeson for the rest of the regular season and maybe even the playoffs.  Next man up for us.

Another must win game comes up Wednesday against Millbrook on their Senior Night.  Let's go Caps!

Caps Men's Soccer Loses on Senior Night

It was a night of highs and lows for Broughton (11-6, 5-5) as they took a 1-0 lead to halftime but surrendered two second half goals to lose to Leesville Road 1-2 on Senior Night.

The Caps started out strong and took an early 1-0 lead off a nice pass from Andrew Rossetti to Senior Erik Johnsen who very nicely slotted the ball across the GK and into the net to give the boys the lead.

Broughton had several more chances in the first half but couldn't finish to make the score 1-0.

The second half started off well, but within a span of 10 minutes, the Caps went from 1-0 up to 1-2 down.  The boys continued to battle and put several good shots onto the Leesville GK (especially John White) - but we came up short at the final whistle.

The loss hurt even more as Junior Lucas Beeson went out to a concussion during the game and Senior Ahmed Magoub to a thigh injury.  Both will miss a few weeks and we'll miss them for sure.

Here are picture from Marc Ridel: LINK

I'd like to specifically call out and thank the Senior for their service to the team:

Jack Ashby (Cap)
Clay Oxford (Cap)
Franklin Noyola
Erik Johnsen
Harrison Lee
Lex Varani (inj)
Stephen Holloman
Ewan Reynolds
Cesar Gonzalez
Ahmed Magoub

Next game is Monday, Oct 23 v Sanderson.

Caps Men's Soccer Gets Revenge Against Enloe 2-1

It seems like it is always cloudy and raining when we play at Enloe. And in a rescheduled game from Wednesday, Broughton (11-4, 5-3) moved to stand alone third place in the Cap-7 with a 2-1 victory at Enloe - which was payback for their victory against us a few weeks ago.

The first half of the game was very even with both teams having opportunities to score. Senior Ahmed Magoub and Junior John White had several good first half chances.  However, it was the middle of the Caps lineup: Senior Cesar Gonzalez, Senior Lex Varani and Junior Logan Hunter who established their presence in this first half as Enloe would continually move the ball through the middle and continually they - with help from Captain Clay Oxford - thwarted every Eagle attack.  The first half ended 0-0.

Coach Brannan's talk at halftime proved successful as the Caps came out and got 2 goals in the first 20 minutes: the first from Ahmed, who took a nice chipped in pass from Junior Andrew Rossetti around the excellent Enloe GK to give us our first goal.  Then, Sophomore Parker Willis delivered a beautiful long free kick to the top of the box where Senior Lex Varani headed it backwards past the Enloe GK who had been running out to stop the initial pass.

Enloe then showed why they are in second place in the Cap-7 and took it to us for 10 minutes finally getting a well deserved goal to make it 2-1.  However, the last 10 minutes was all Caps and we came away with the 2-1 victory.  A special shout out to the entire DEF last night: including Clay, Lex and Logan, but also Senior Ewan Reynolds, Juniors Duncan Coffey/Ivey O'Brien and Sophomore Jack Eubank.  The Cap-7 leading scorer for Enloe (Harry Cooper) had 0 points in this game - and he's an excellent player.

The end of the game got a little testy as - not surprisingly - Enloe didn't enjoy our celebration at midfield (as we didn't enjoy theirs a few weeks ago).  However, cooler heads prevailed and both teams should be proud of the game and both will be tough outs come playoff time.

Next game is Monday (Oct 16) v Leesville Road - which is SENIOR NIGHT - and we'd ask that all BHS family, friends and supporters come out and show appreciation to the boys who have worked so hard for this team. (As well, we can also get some revenge against Leesville who beat us 1-0).

Sko Caps!!

Lady Caps Show Heart at Cap7A Tournament

The Cap 7A Women's Tennis tournament began today at Millbrook Exchange Tennis Park. Representing Broughton at the tournament were Junior Becket Waters and Freshman Trevlyn Roberts in singles play. Also representing Broughton were two doubles teams, Senior Elizabeth Bell and Junior Meg Hardesty and Senior Becca Pharr and Junior Katie Burroughs.

Pharr and Burroughs fought with true grit in the first round but lost a heartbreaker of a match to Rogers and Ye from Enloe, 9-11.

Bell and Hardesty defeated Callus and Johnson of Southeast 10-0 in the first round. They lost to Holshouser and Craft of Sanderson 0-10 in the second round but came back in the third round to defeat Cirillo and Shea from Millbrook, 10-1.

Becket Waters received a first round bye, then defeated Schenberger of Sanderson, 10-2 in the second round. Waters then defeated Taranto of Millbrook, 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 {14-12} to advance to the finals. She will face Sibel Tanik of Sanderson for the Cap 7A Singles Championship tomorrow!

Trevlyn Roberts also had a first round bye. She lost to Battle of Enloe 6-10 in the second round after a rain delay. However, Trevlyn showed true heart and determination upsetting Kruger of Cardinal Gibbons in the third round 2-6, 6-1 1-0 {10-7}.

Elizabeth, Meg, Becket and Trevlyn all advance to regional play next weekend in Wrightsville Beach to represent the Cap7A. Cheer them on next week as they travel and fight to bring home more wins for the Lady Caps!

Caps Men's Soccer Dominates SE Raleigh 7-1

It was the Cesar Gonzalez show last night for Broughton (10-4, 4-3) as the Senior had his first ever hat trick to help lead us past SE Raleigh 7-1.

Cesar opened up the scoring right away with 2 goals in the first 15 minutes - this first off an assist from Junior John White and the second from Senior Erik Johnsen to make it 2-0.  Then, in a play that helped Broughton defend the lead, an indirect free kick was called in the box against us and we lined up the entire team on the goal line to stop the upcoming shot. The wall, led by Senior Harrison Lee and Junior Ivey O'Brien ran out and Senior Clay Oxford blocked the shot and thwarted the attack.

After that there were goals-a-plenty as follows:

Erik Johnsen from Scott Rostick (Jr.) - great team goal
John White from Parker Willis (So.)
Carter Gasia (Jr.) from Andrew Rossetti (Jr.)
Cesar from Tzo (So.)
Carter Gasia from Ahmed Magoub (Sr.)

Photos from the game are linked here: Marc Ridel

With the victory, the Caps moved to 3rd place in the Cap-7 and have a showdown on Wednesday against Enloe @ Enloe.  Please make the short drive out to Enloe on Wednesday to cheer the boys on.

Seniors Celebrate as Lady Caps Tennis defeats Millbrook

(L to R) Seniors Becca Pharr, Eliza Marlowe, Bella DeVivo, Janie Grace Gilbert and Elizabeth Bell with Coach Dale Roane before their final match as Lady Caps vs. Millbrook.

Senior Day for the Broughton Women's Tennis saw the high school careers of Elizabeth Bell, Becca Pharr, Eliza Marlowe, Janie Grace Gilbert and Bella DeVivo come to a close with a great win over the Millbrook Wildcats, 7-2. Elizabeth Bell and Becca Pharr claimed victory on the #5 and 6 singles courts and as doubles partners on the #2 doubles court. Janie Grace Gilbert teamed up with Junior Meg Hardesty to claim the #1 doubles victory. While it has been a year of growth for the Lady Caps, the contributions of the Senior Women are greatly appreciated! All in the Broughton Tennis Family will miss them as they go onto college and life beyond.
The Lady Caps will play in the Cap7A Tournament next Tuesday and Wednesday at Millbrook Exchange Park. Come out and support the Lady Caps in the tournament!

Caps Men's Soccer Defeats Millbrook 6-2

After a string of defeats to start the Cap-7 season, Broughton (9-4, 3-3) rode the hat trick of Senior Ahmed Magoub to defeat Millbrook 6-2.

The first half was the Ahmed Magoub show as the Senior started off the scoring with a nice finish off a deflected shot to make it 1-0 and then scored on a great header from a Sophomore Jack Eubank cross to make it 2-0.

Millbrook scored to start the second half, but the Caps did not panic in a game that they were in complete control of from start to finish.  Junior John White was involved in 3 of the next 4 goals and started off with a strong run and cross to Junior Andrew Rossetti who poked it home for his 10th goal of the season to make it 3-1.  John then got his own goal by beating two Wildcat defenders and rifling it past the GK to put us 4-1 up.  Then, the goal of the season for the Caps as Andrew Rossetti drove down the right side, put a high cross up to Ahmed - who then scissor kicked in mid air for the 5th goal for the Caps.  The team, coaches and fans went crazy (as did the Millbrook coach who thought it was a high kick).  John White then set up the 6th and final goal with a pretty pass to Junior Lucas Beeson who slotted it home to make the final 6-2 Caps.

While Ahmed was the obvious and deserving POG, the whole team played well and showed the resiliency needed to come back from 4 losses and start a new streak.

We are off the rest of the week and then back in action at home next Monday versus Southeast Raleigh.  Please come out and support Caps Football against Enloe for Homecoming this Friday!!
