Six different players scored as the Lady Caps opened the season with a dominating 7-0 non-conference win at Rolesville.
To be fair, Rolesville was playing short-handed after some of their players were involved in an automobile accident before the game. That left Rolesville with only 11 players, and the two teams played 10 v. 10 for a few minutes in the second half when Broughton coach Tony DuBois pulled one of his players off the field while a Rolesville player was out with an injury.
The Caps were dominant from the beginning, peppering the Rolesville keeper with shots throughout the game. She managed to hold off Broughton's relentless attack for the first 26 minutes, when the Caps finally found the back of the net to get the scoring started. Senior Abby Manring scored the first goal of the season off a pass from senior Anne Lassiter Barnes.
Other scoring by the Caps:
29th minute - Freshman Morgan Holt scored her first goal for Broughton when she lofted in a free kick from outside the 18.
41st minute - Barnes scored, assist to senior Lucy Krueger.
45th minute - Barnes scored again, assist to senior Cate Brewer.
68th minute - Junior Lynde Flanders scored, assist to sophomore Elizabeth Gilchrist.
69th minute - Freshman Allie Brown scored, assist to sophomore Claire Hopkins.
78th minute - Junior Sara Hanna Fortier scored.
Meanwhile, the Broughton defensive back line and senior keeper Davia Ingram-Terry opened the season with a shutout.
Earlier, the junior varsity team posted a 5-1 win over Rolesville. They were led by two goals from Sophie Chester-Thompson. Hallie Worth and Spencer Hughes also scored, along with an own goal by Rolesville on a corner kick in the first half.

Wrestling: 4A State Championship Final Update
February 17th; Greensboro, NC - In front of 8,000 spectators at the Greensboro Coliseum, we had five Caps who had earned the privilege to compete at the 4A NCHSAA State Championships by placing top four in Regionals the weekend before. In the grueling three-day tournament, a wrestler must make weight in three consecutive days as well as avoid injury. Seniors Nash Philbeck, Nic Valdespino and Christian Hite all went undefeated through the first two days to advance to the State Championship Finals. On Saturday night, each dropped close matches in the final, but held their heads high as 4A East Region Champions and NCHSAA 4A State Runner-Ups. Junior Kaleb Wright made of a run of his own placing 4th, and also had claimed a Regional Championship the week before. Senior Patrick Maxwell capped off a stellar season by winning two matches at the State Tournament.
Having five wrestlers qualify for the State Tournament as well as having four earn a place at the podium is unprecedented at NBHS. The endurance, discipline and courage the sport demands to participate and win is inspiring, and these student-athletes should be applauded. We close the book on the season and on the careers of our four seniors. Thank you to the coaching staff, supporters and fans.
