LAX: Lady Caps Lose to Visitors from PA

On March 26, the Lady Caps hosted a team from Pennsylvania which visited the Raleigh area to engage in more competitive play on its own spring break. Sprint Hill dominated the Caps in the first half by a score of 13 – 1. However, the Caps and its defensive efforts, kept the visitors from major scoring action in the second half and finished the game 4-14.

Bailey Burgess scored a hat trick for Broughton, with Margaret Anne Warner scoring the other goal. Anneka Pace and Warner each grabbed 5 ground balls. Broughton Lady Laxers will resume play after break, with an away game at Panther Creek on Thursday, April 12. Game begins at 6:30 p.m.

Softball: Caps Swing into Spring with a Win!

With some true Spring weather finally arriving at the Pullen Park Softball field on Wednesday, the Caps grabbed a great win against Wakefield, 10-4. Abby Lehr pitched one of her best games of the season, with some heat that was too much for the Wolverines to handle.

The Caps found themselves in a great position, with plenty of hot bats and even better fielding. First inning saw great fielding from Demi Jones, who snagged a grounder and got the ball to Nina Oliva on first for the first out. Merritt Hicks followed up with a catch of a pop-fly to second and Lehr finished the inning with a strike out. And, second inning saw an interesting play - if not painful for one Wolverine player - when a line drive up the first base line hit the runner on first. Nina Oliva added more pain by quickly grabbing the ball from the ground and tagging the runner out. But, despite several hits by the Caps, we were kept scoreless in the first and second innings.

The third inning saw lots of action in the field for the Caps. Starting with another strike out by Abby Lehr. Merritt Hicks made a great play at second base and caught a runner trying to steal second base. But, Mikayla Cunningham had the catch of the day when she dove for a shallow ball between center and right field. Wow is all the crowd could say to that one!

The fourth inning was the Abby Lehr Show, as she single-handedly made all three outs: she caught a pop out, then struck a batter out and finally fielded a grounder and got it to Nina Oliva for the out at first. On offense, the Caps finally started scoring as Wakefield struggled with pitching. Several walks set up a bases loaded situation, where Regan Curtis and Kate Livesay were both able to steal home. Add a grounder by Demi Jones that brought Jocelyn Towe across the plate and the score was suddenly tied at 3-3.

The last three innings resulted in only one more run from Wakefield. But, the Caps capitalized on some solid hitting, patient batters who walked and some good base running and stealing that resulted in runs. Specifically, Regan Curtis, stole 2nd, 3rd and home in the 5th inning. In the same inning, Nina Oliva stole 2nd and home, while Allie Carmack stole 3rd base and was sent home on a pitcher balk.

The last inning was all about the single, with all of these Caps getting a hit that resulted in them getting on first base and advancing runners: Demi Jones, Elizabeth Rotchford, Nina Oliva, Allie Carmack, Jocelyn Towe, and Kate Livesay. Add in there a hard hit to left field for a double from Merritt Hicks, and the Caps racked up 4 more runs in their last at bat.

And with that win, the Caps head into Spring Break. They'll be in action again at home on Tuesday, April 10.

Soccer: Caps ride second-half surge to 8-1 win

Broughton overwhelmed Cardinal Gibbons with an offensive onslaught in the second half -- including a hat trick by freshman Morgan Holt -- to post an 8-1 win Wednesday night. The win puts the Caps at 6-2-1 (3-1 in conference play) heading into spring break.

The road game started with a familiar scene -- the Caps giving up an early goal. Cardinal Gibbons took advantage of a defensive lapse by Broughton to score less than a minute into the game.

The Caps settled down after that, and controlled possession for most of the half. But they were unable to score until late in the first half, when senior Abby Manring knocked in a crossing pass from sophomore Elizabeth Gilchrist in the 32nd minute. The Caps got another goal about five minutes later when freshman Annie Agar nailed a free kick through the hands of the Crusaders' keeper, and took a 2-1 lead into the half.

The offensive barrage began about four minutes into the second half when senior Anne Lassiter Barnes spun off of a defender and buried a shot into the back of the net to give the Caps a 3-1 lead. Just a few minutes later, Manring scored her second goal of the night off a cross from freshman Allie Brown. Within seconds of that goal, Holt converted a penalty kick after Barnes was fouled in the box, giving the Caps a 5-1 lead.

But Broughton wasn't done. Holt got her second goal of the night on a free kick in the 53rd minute, and senior Meredith Brown added to the total when she headed in a corner in the 56th minute. Holt finished off her hat trick with a goal in the 62nd minute to give the Caps an 8-1 lead.

Earlier, the junior varsity team lost 0-1 to Cardinal Gibbons in a hard-fought game.

Caps Golf Rolls to 4th Cap 7 Win

Broughton Men's Golf posted a team total of 1 over par 141 to win its 4th conference match on Wednesday afternoon at Wildwood Green Golf Club.  Cardinal Gibbons was 2nd at 152 and Leesville 3rd.

The Caps had balanced scoring with even par 35's from Biggs Hawley, Britt Stroud and Connor Jones, plus a 1 over par 36 from Patrick Carlin.

The even par rounds from Hawley, Stroud and Jones tied for Medalist honors, along with Devin Phillips of Cardinal Gibbons.

After plenty of Spring Break practice and relaxation, the Caps will head into their 5th conference match at North Ridge on Monday, April 9th.

Soccer: Comeback bid at Leesville falls short

After falling behind 3-0 early in the second half at Leesville Monday night, the Caps rallied with a second-half surge that put a scare into the undefeated Pride. But the deficit proved to be too large, and Broughton suffered its first conference loss, 3-2.

Leesville struck quickly, scoring on a PK with barely a minute gone in the game. The home team scored again about midway through the first half, and then again within the first minute of the second half.

But the Caps didn't give up, stepping up their effort on the defensive and offensive sides of the ball. Freshman Annie Agar and junior Grey Ramm both made key defensive stops on dangerous balls, and senior keeper Cate Brewer continued her strong play in goal.

Broughton got on the scoreboard in the 48th minute when junior Sara Hanna Fortier scored, and then added another goal about seven minutes later when the Leesville keeper was unable to handle a long free kick by sophomore Adair Warner. The Caps continued to attack, but were unable to notch a goal to tie the game.

The Caps return to action on Wednesday night, with a conference match at Cardinal Gibbons.

Baseball: Caps Open Cap-7 with Hot Start

Broughton (11) v. SE Raleigh (1)-  The Broughton Varsity Baseball Team opened the 2018 Cap-7 Conference season with a huge win against SE Raleigh on March 13 at Wiley Warren Field.  The Caps collected 14 hits, including 7 by the first two batters in the line-up, to rout SE Raleigh 11-1.

Kyle Ehlers and Campbell Nixon were red hot for the Caps.  Ehlers went 4-4, including two doubles and two singles, scored 4 times and batted in 2, to lead the Caps.  Nixon went 3-3, knocked in 3 and scored.  Mathis Dean, Tobin Petrie, Penn Sealey and Robert Ramseur also tallied hits and RBIs in the contest.

Joe Barrow was strong on the mound, collecting the win by completing 4 solid innings in which he surrendered just three hits versus 7 strikeouts and no walks.

Broughton (12) v. SE Raleigh (2)-  Broughton's offense continued to show firepower as as the Caps overwhelmed SE Raleigh on March 16  by a score of 12-2.   A number of Caps had big days at the plate collecting multiple hits, including Campbell Nixon, Mathis Dean, Xander Hamilton, Joe Barrow, Penn Sealey and Jackson Highsmith.

Xander Hamilton was the winning pitcher and fanned 7 without a walk.  Seniors Walker Dixon and Kyle Ehler teamed up in relief to seal the win for the Caps.

Broughton (1) v. Enloe (6)-  Broughton's offense went stagnant against the Enloe Eagles at Wiley Warren Field on March 22, as the Caps dropped its first conference game 6-1.  The Caps could not get anything going offensively, struggling to get only 5 hits for the game.  The lone bright spot for the Caps was the performance of Senior Jackson Highsmith, who went 3-3  and scored Broughton's lone run.

Broughton (5) at Enloe (3)-  The Caps returned to its winning ways on March 23, as Broughton held on to grab a 5-3 win over conference rival Enloe in the first Cap-7 away game.

The Caps got things started in the Top of the second inning with a single from Jon Benefield and a double from Joe Barrow.  In the top of the fourth, the Caps raced out to a 3-0 lead as pitcher Xander Hamilton hit a two-run homer.  Kyle Ehlers followed suit in the top of the 6th, smashing his own two-run line-drive home run over the left-center fence.

Things got interesting for the Caps in the late innings, thanks to some untimely errors and walks, but managed to hold off the Eagles for a third conference win.  Xander Hamilton was the winning pitcher and Kyle Ehlers was credited the save.

Broughton hosts a non-conference match-up against Knightdale on Monday, March 26 at 4:30.  The game is Teacher Appreciation Day and the team will honor and recognize a few of the teachers that have been supportive of the team off the field.  Come out early to watch the pre-game festivities and to thank some of Broughton's fantastic teachers.  Go Caps!

LAX: Lady Caps Win Two Conference Matches

After a sweet 14-4 victory at Wakefield on March 15, the CAPS returned to conference play last week. Broughton hosted Sanderson on March 23 and then turned around and travelled to Millbrook on the 24th.  The Lady CAPS easily pulled off victories with both rivals, despite annual field trips, school functions and injuries reducing roster size and causing some shuffling of players’ positions.

Addie Camak and Margaret Anne Warner each contributed 7 goals toward the win over the Spartans. Anneka Pace, Baily Burgess and Margaret Crone each scored twice, creating the final score of 20-2. Caps dominated on ground-ball action with Warner scooping up 7, Camak scooping 5, Erin Wadsworth with 3 and other single and double gets from across the team.  Without any subs, Broughton led at the half 9-2. Various players faced off and saw success, including Camak with a whopping 8 draw wins, Abigail Pugh with 3, Warner and Grace Palmer with 2 each, and Pace and Crone with 1 win each.  Another fun highlight from the evening included 3 amazing interceptions by Junior standout Warner.

Despite a slow start at Millbrook, the CAPS managed to lead at halftime by a score of 5-2, before wrapping up a 10-4 victory. Freshman goalie Lauren Bryner shined with 3 saves in the first half and 6 saves in the second half. The scoreboard lit up with goals by Addie Camak (5), Margaret Anne Warner (3), Dylan Kadis (1) and Emily Clark Joyner (1). Warner also led the team with assists (2) and draw wins (4). Anneka Pace fought and won for 4 ground balls and had 1 takeaway as did Abigail Pugh, Camak and Warner.

Catch the Lady Laxers at home on Monday, March 26 as they host Springfield High School from Pennsylvania for the travelling team’s spring-break fun.Varsity game starts at 6:30 p.m.

Tough Week for Broughton Softball

Despite the bad weather that engulfed much of the week, the Lady CAPS Softball team still managed to squeeze in three games: one against Southeast High School and a double header at Enloe.

With several CAPS players missing the games due to other school obligations, the team struggled to capture a win. Despite losing to Southeast 13-3 and Enloe 27-7 and then 19-3, there were plenty of highlights of to be had.

Dare Bartelt led the way in great playing with her impressive performance again Southeast. In addition to keeping the Bulldogs scoreless in the first inning. Dare was also responsible for two strike outs in the third inning. The Southeast game also highlighted how great the Broughton bats can be. Demi Jones started the team off with a hard high shot to right field and throughout the game solid hits came from Regan Curtis, Abby Lehr, Trinity Harris, Dare Bartelt, Nina Oliva, Allie Carmack. But Broughton had a hard time stringing together their hits, and stopping The Bulldogs when their bats got hot.

With the exception of a few really great plays, the CAPS had a hard time on defense again at Enloe. Some exceptions to that were some great catches by Merritt Hicks in center field, and a great tag she had on a throw from catcher Nina Oliva to get a runner stealing 2nd base out. Demi Jones also had a great catch on a line drive to her at short stop. While taking a break from catching at first base, Regan Curtis snagged a foul ball for an out in the second Enloe game. And, Emma Hoyt sprinted to a deep right hit for an amazing lunging catch.

On offense at Enloe, the first inning of the first game was the CAPS' best. With Demi Jones, Merritt Hicks, Nina Oliva, Kate Livesay and Abby Lehr all having solid hits, the CAPS scored 4 runs. The most of the day. But, the second game saw a shot from Regan Curtis' go to deep left field that hugged the third base line and got a double from it. But, the highlight of the second game at bat for Broughton came from Jocelyn Towe, who hit a long ball to hit the fence between Left and Center fields. It was just inches from going over!

The results were not what Broughton was hoping for, but there were moments they hope to build on in future games.

Caps Golf Places 3rd at North State High School Challenge

On Saturday, Broughton posted the lowest one day team score of the tournament, shooting 6 over 290, to come back from a lackluster first day to finish 3rd at the North State High School Challenge.  The tournament was played at the Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, NC on Friday and Saturday.

During Saturday's round, Biggs Hawley holed out twice for eagle en route to an even par 71.  Peter Fountain matched him with a more conventional even par 71 that included 3 birdies.  Britt Stroud had 4 birdies on the way to a 73 and Connor Jones shot a 75 that included 2 birdies.

First day leader Pinecrest High of Pinehurst held on to take the team title, posting a 294 on Friday and 291 on Saturday to win by 5 strokes over Charlotte Catholic.  The Caps finished 14 shots back, tied with Charlotte Myers Park.

During Friday's first round, Broughton was again led by Biggs Hawley with a 75.  Peter Fountain shot 76, Patrick Carlin 78 and Connor Jones 80 to round out the team total of 309, which left the Caps in 8th place.  Saturday's strong comeback gives the Caps something to build on as we prepare to meet many of these teams in the state tournament in May.

The Top 10 final team standings were:

Pinecrest - 585
Charlotte Catholic - 590
Broughton - 599
Myers Park - 599
Christ School - 600
Ardrey Kell - 602

Soccer: Caps win home opener over Millbrook

Two goals by senior Anne Lassiter Barnes and a strong team defensive effort led the Caps to a 2-0 conference win over Millbrook Monday night in Broughton's long-awaited home opener.

The Caps were the dominant team for much of the game, but were unable to convert on several scoring chances in the first half -- leading to a scoreless tie at the half.

But Broughton finally broke through in the 57th minute when Barnes finished off the rebound after a shot by senior Abby Manring bounced off the post. Five minutes later, Barnes made a great move to get past a defender and nailed a shot that deflected off the outstretched hand of the Millbrook keeper to land just inside the far post to give Broughton a 2-0 lead.

Millbrook stepped up its attack, but Broughton's defensive line held firm for the game's final 20 minutes. Senior keeper Cate Brewer made a save in the 65th minute to help preserve the shutout.

Earlier, the junior varsity team lost 1-3 to Millbrook. The Wildcats jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but Broughton clawed its way back when Delaney DuBois slammed a free kick off the fingers of the Millbrook keeper and into the net midway through the first half.

The Caps return to action on Wednesday, with a home conference match against Enloe.

First Conference Game of the Season Brings First Win for Caps Softball

The Lady Caps kicked off the conference part of their schedule on Friday when they hosted the SE Raleigh Bulldogs.

The Caps picked the perfect game to find their bats, scoring 8 runs in a single inning. One of the many great hits during the game included Merritt Hicks, who launched one over the heads of the outfielders and turned on the speed around the plates to get an inside-the-park home run.

They managed to couple that with some phenomenal defense. Dare Bartlet led the charge with a great performance on the mound. She was helped out by Allie Carmack, who caught a high one in left field and got it to Demi Jones at second base in time for the double play. But that was not the only double play of the game! Later, Demi Jones caught a high, line drive at short stop and sent a bullet over to Nina Oliva on first base for Broughton's second double play of the game.

In the end, the Caps bested SE Raleigh 13-3, and they got to start their conference play this season with one in the win column.

You can catch the team in action this week on Tuesday at home against Enloe, Thursday at home against Southeast Raleigh (again) and on Friday away at Enloe.
