Softball: Caps' Season Starts on a Rain Delay

Broughton’s Softball Team started their season a bit delayed this year, as their first game against Wakefield was canceled due to the rain on Thursday. But, on Friday, they made the trek to South Garner, where they faced the always tough Trojans.

With the chilly temperatures and the wind whipping, the Caps tried to stay hot on their base running in the first inning, with Merritt Hicks, Demi Jones and Regan Curtis all showing some skill taking bases. But, Hicks got caught for the third out on her attempt to steal home, and the Caps ended the first inning scoreless.

South Garner had a bit more luck at bat, and the game went into the second inning with them up 7-0.

Second inning, South Garner introduced a new pitcher who was hard to hit off of but was also inconsistent. While Elizabeth Rotchford and Nina Oliva earned walks from their pitcher, three other Caps were called out on strikes. Briana Francisco continued to pitch for the Caps in the second inning but got a break from Dare Bartelt after 4 batters. Bartelt finished the inning, and the Caps slowed the number of runs scored by the Trojans to three, making the score 10-0.

In the third and fourth innings, the Caps still struggled at the plate to get something going. But, their fielding improved. Between a couple of walks, the Caps fielded the ball well when it was hit. Those great plays included an impressive catch by center fielder Merritt Hicks, who nabbed a deep shot by the Trojans for the 3rd out in the third inning. Also, left fielder, Demi Jones had two great catches on deep hits in the fourth inning.

The Caps had one more shot at bat in the fifth inning to make something happen, but they continued to struggle against Garner’s strong pitcher. And, the game ended 16-0.

The Lady Caps are being hosted on Monday, March 5th by the Corinth Holders. They will also be playing away at Wakefield on Wednesday (March 7th) and home against Rolesville on Friday (March 9th).
