Soccer: Caps earn shutout on Senior Night

Broughton relied on goals from two of its seniors Monday night to record a 3-0 win on Senior Night and complete the season sweep of Cardinal Gibbons.

The win also secured a second-place finish in the Cap 7 for Broughton, which wraps up the regular season with a game at Sanderson on Wednesday.

A large crowd turned out to cheer for Broughton's eight seniors, and they weren't disappointed when senior Meredith Brown got the scoring started about midway through the first half with a shot from outside that went over the keeper's outstretched hands. A few minutes later, senior Abby Manring just missed scoring when her shot caromed off both posts before being corralled by the Crusaders' keeper.

Senior Anne Lassiter Barnes had her turn in the 26th minute, when she fired a shot into the upper 90 to give the Caps a 2-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Broughton's defense stepped up as Cardinal Gibbons tried to crawl back into the game. Sophomore keeper Sydney Spoor made a couple of nice saves early in the second half, and junior Abby Finan hustled back on defense to muck up a couple of Cardinal Gibbons breakaways.

The Caps got the final goal of the night in the 77th minute when Brown tapped in a free kick by sophomore Adair Warner that bounced out of the hands of the Cardinal Gibbons keeper.

At halftime, Broughton honored its eight seniors - Davia Ingram-Terry, Abby Manring, Cate Brewer, Grace Hopkins, Anne Lassiter Barnes, Maggie Gall, Lucy Krueger and Meredith Brown.

Earlier, the Broughton JV won 1-0 over Cardinal Gibbons on a goal by Ava Reid.

Soccer: Caps earn 3-1 road win at Enloe

Three different Caps players scored as Broughton posted a 3-1 win Thursday night over a scrappy Enloe team that was celebrating Senior Night on its home field.

The Caps dominated possession for most of the game, but struggled to connect around the goal. Broughton finally scored in the 28th minute, when senior Meredith Brown connected from close range on a pass from senior Abby Manring.

Broughton didn't score again until midway through the second half, when sophomore Elizabeth Gilchrist blasted a beautiful shot from outside to give the Caps a 2-0 lead. The Caps added another goal a few minutes later when senior Anne Lassiter Barnes buried a ball when it bounced out of a scrum in front of the net on a corner kick.

Meanwhile, the Broughton defense made stops when Enloe managed to mount an attack. Sophomore Sydney Spoor ran to the edge of the box to thwart an Enloe breakaway in the 61st minute and junior Emma Appleby made a nice defensive stop on another Enloe breakaway in the 72nd minute.

The Eagles scored their lone goal with 47 seconds remaining in the game to make the final score 3-1.

Earlier, the Broughton JV lost 1-2. The lone Caps goal came on a pretty give-and-go between Minta Brice and Hallie Worth, with Brice getting the goal with about 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Caps return to action on Monday night with a home game against Cardinal Gibbons. The Caps will recognize the team's seniors in a halftime ceremony.

Soccer: Broughton loses to Leesville Road

Broughton suffered a 1-2 home loss to Leesville Road Wednesday night that effectively ends the Caps hopes of winning the conference championship this year.

The Caps came into the match on a six-game winning streak, but Leesville was the aggressor in the opening  minutes of the half. The Pride earned a couple of corners and kept the Caps on the defensive before finally scoring in the 23rd minute by converting a PK after a foul was called on Broughton in the box.

The Caps settled down following the goal, and had two close calls on scoring chances -- one on a brilliant header by senior Abby Manring that hit the crossbar -- in the closing minutes of the first half.

Broughton had more scoring chances in the second half, including a shot by senior Meredith Brown that was deflected by a diving Leesville keeper in the 63rd minute. Just a couple of minutes later, Leesville scored on a breakaway to make the score 0-2.

The Caps scrambled to get back in the game, and finally scored in the 77th minute when senior Cate Brewer kicked in a corner by freshman Annie Agar. The Caps had one final corner in the closing seconds of the game, but were unable to convert.

Broughton returns to action on Thursday with a road match at Enloe.

Earlier, the Broughton JV suffered a tough 0-2 loss to Leesville.

Caps Golf Sweeps Cap 7 - Biggs Hawley is Conference Player of the Year

Rainy skies cooperated just long enough to squeeze in the final Cap 7 golf match of the year at Hedingham Golf Club, hosted by Southeast Raleigh.

The Caps fired a 2 over par team total of 142 to complete the sweep of the season's 7 conference matches.  Once again, Cardinal Gibbons put up a fight, posting 145, and Leesville finished 3rd at 153.

The Caps were led by match Medalist Peter Fountain, who tied Ryan Macri of Cardinal Gibbons at 1 under 34.  Frank Gilliam contributed an even par 35, Biggs Hawley shot 36, Connor Jones and Patrick Carlin shot 37 and Britt Stroud shot 38.

Over the course of a full season, the Caps' top 4 scores in 7 matches totaled an impressive 1 over par.  Since shooting 10 over in the first match of the season, the Caps went 9 under the rest of the way.

As the final match began, Biggs Hawley held a solid 4 stroke lead for Player of the Year honors.  Paired with pursuers Britt Stroud and Gibbons' Chris Sperrazza, Hawley cemented the title with a solid 1 over 36, but the honor was really won with Hawley's combined 8 under in the previous two matches, finishing the full season at 7 under par.

Cap 7 Player of the Year Biggs Hawley was joined on the Cap 7 All-Conference team by teammates Britt Stroud, Peter Fountain, Patrick Carlin and Connor Jones.

Seniors Patrick Carlin and Connor Jones played their final Cap 7 match as All-Conference performers, with Patrick Carlin making All-Conference in each of his 4 years on the team.

Next up for the Caps is the Regional tournament at Raleigh Country Club on May 1st, with the top 3 teams advancing to the State tournament in Pinehurst.

Go Caps!

SOFTBALL: Caps Split Their Games Against Cardinal Gibbons

In a week of softball that can be summed up by one player - a college-signed pitcher for Cardinal Gibbons - the Broughton CAPS demonstrated how far their defensive play has come this season.

On Tuesday, the team faced off on their first game of the week against the Crusaders. The game was mostly marked by the fact that the Cardinal Gibbons managed to strike out 14 of Broughton's at-bats. But Broughton was able to keep them mostly in check the first three innings with some great defensive play by Merritt Hicks, Demi Jones, Mikayla Cunningham, Allie Carmack, Elizabeth Rotchford and Abby Lehr, who struck a batter or two as pitcher.

Fourth inning started with the CAPS down 2-0 and saw some uncharacteristic defensive mistakes that resulted in the bases getting loaded up. The Crusaders then had a batter hit a hard grounder that got away from the CAPS, and she suddenly brought in several runs on an inside the park home run. Fortunately, Abby Lehr was able to strike out a batter, another line drive to Lehr was thrown out at first and finally a grounder to third and a full split on the catch by first baseman, Nina Oliva, got the third out. And, the inning was finally over with the CAPS down 8-0.

While Cardinal Gibbons was able to grab one more run in the fifth inning, that inning was definitely the Broughton show. With two outs and two players on base, Allie Carmack gets up to the plate and hits a perfect shot down the first base line for the a double. Two batters later the amazing Merritt Hicks gets up and hits her own inside the park home run, and the inning ends a few batters later with a score of 9-5. The last inning saw the CAPS make a last gasp effort to come from behind. But they fell just short, as the third out came with Reagan Curtis just missing the steal at home. And, the final score was 9-7.

The second game was played at Cardinal Gibbons on a beautiful Friday afternoon. The game was marked by some strange ump calls that frustrated the CAPS as they tried to understand what was allowed and what wasn't. Also, the SIX pitcher changes that the Crusaders made throughout the game resulted in a very long game with lots of stopping and starting. But, in the end, the CAPS were just too much for them, and they took a big 18-6 win over Cardinal Gibbons.

The beginning of the second game seemed reminiscent of the first game. The Crusader's starting pitcher struck out 8 of our batters in the first three innings. On the other hand, Broughton had an uncharacteristically bad defensive inning in the very first inning, and we found ourselves down 5-0 going into the fourth inning.

But the Lady CAPS are a never-say-die kind of team, and the fourth inning brought a new Cardinal Gibbons pitcher and some great offensive action for the team. With Reagan Curtis on first base, Nina Oliva hit a hard grounder that was bobbled by the second baseman. Oliva took the error to her full advantage and scored an in-the-park home run. Not to be outdone, Allie Carmack got a nice hit into shallow center field for a single. But, by the time she was done, she had stolen second, third and home for the run. The Crusaders added another run in the inning to their tally, but not before Merritt Hicks, fielded a ground ball and threw to Nina Oliva for the out at first. Oliva then threw to Reagan Curtis at home for the double play! And, with that the inning ended 6-3.

The Crusaders would not score again for the rest of the game, due to solid play all around by the CAPS infield. But Broughton was just getting started on tallying up their runs. Great base running and stealing by the likes of Elizabeth Rotchford, Reagan Curtis, Allie Carmack, Merritt Hicks and Nina Oliva brought the team several runs. Couple that with some great hitting Demi Jones (double to left field), Elizabeth Rotchford (single to shallow right field AND another to deep center field for triple), Reagan Curtis (deep center field shot for triple), Joselyn Towe (grounder to shallow left for single) Mikayla Cunningham (down first base line for double), Nina Oliva (deep hit to center field for triple).

With the game in the WIN column, the CAPS look forward to taking on Sanderson this week.

Fountain Wins Pinecrest Golf Title - Caps Team Falls 3 Shots Short

Congratulations to Broughton sophomore Peter Fountain who was the co-champion of the Pinecrest Invitational played Thursday, April 19th, on Pinehurst No. 8 (6,704 yards; par 72).  Fountain tied Michael Childress of the Cannon School of Concord, NC for the title.

Very strong winds from an arriving cold front once again played a big role in the competition.  Players had to repeatedly back away from shots and putts, hoping for a lull.  Approach shots were treacherous.  Into the wind, shots that appeared long would hit a wall and fall short of the green or spin back off.  With the wind, it was very difficult to keep shots from running through the green and over the back, leaving difficult up and down attempts.

Against that backdrop, scoring was challenging.  Only about a quarter of the field broke 80, with some of the top ranked high school golfers in the state unable to do so.

The tournament was run by the Tarheel Youth Golf Association (TYGA) and featured live scoring.  As coaches and parents followed the leaderboard on their smartphones in close to real time, the lead ebbed back and forth all day.  At one point, the Caps held the lead, including a sizable margin over other 4A powers, such as Pinecrest, Myers Park and Hough, but in the end could not hold on for the win.  The tightness of the competition should give the Caps players confidence heading into the state tournament.

Peter Fountain had a remarkably steady round under the conditions, carding 12 pars, 4 bogeys, a birdie and an eagle, and also included a couple of chip-in's from off the green.  Fountain is the Caps' highest ranked player statewide, ranked as the #2 NC high schooler by the TYGA, and #5 by Junior Golf Scoreboard.  Peter is committed to play collegiate golf at North Carolina, following his brother and Caps alum Preyer who is currently on the Tar Heel golf team.

Fountain's 1 over par 73, combined with strong scores from seniors Connor Jones, 76, and Patrick Carlin, 78, helped the Caps to a 3rd place finish, 3 shots behind host Pinecrest and the Cannon School.  Pinecrest has won the last 3 NCHSAA 4A state championships, and 4 of the last 6 (the Caps were the only team without 'Pine' in its name to win during that time, in 2014 and 2012), and Cannon is a perennial private school golf power.  Both schools routinely send golfers on to Division 1 golf programs.

Soccer: Caps shut down Enloe in 5-0 win

Freshmen Allie Brown and Morgan Holt each scored two goals and Broughton's defense shut down Enloe's attack Thursday night as the Caps defeated the Eagles 5-0. It was the third conference win of the week for the Caps, who stand alone in second place in the Cap 7.

The Caps were dominant from the beginning of the game, which was played in a cold, gusting wind. Brown got the scoring started less than four minutes into the game when she buried a volley from a corner kick by sophomore Adair Warner.

About three minutes later, Holt got her first goal of the night when she nailed a rebound off a corner kick that she initiated. Meanwhile, the Eagles struggled to get the ball past the midfield line for much of the first half.

Holt got her second goal of the night in the 19th minute when senior Anne Lassiter Barnes dropped off a pass to her in front of the net. Less than two minutes later, Barnes got a goal of her own when she tapped the ball past the onrushing Enloe keeper and into an empty net.

Brown got her second goal of the night when she scored off a crossing pass by freshman Annie Agar. The Caps took a 5-0 lead into the half.

Broughton continued to dominate possession in the second half, but were unable to convert several scoring chances as the wind picked up and the temperature dropped.

But the Broughton defenders -- Agar, Warner, junior Abby Finan, sophomore Lauren McMillan, junior Grey Ramm as well as sophomore Elizabeth Gilchrist in the midfield -- shut down every Enloe attack. Sophomore keeper Sydney Spoor earned her second clean sheet of the week.

The Caps return to action on Monday, when they travel to Enloe to play the Eagles again -- the result of a game being rescheduled earlier in the season due to weather.

Earlier, the Broughton JV earned a tough 1-0 win over Enloe. Ava Reid scored the lone goal off a pass from Emma Dobek. Keeper Lillian Holmes and the defense notched another clean sheet.
