Soccer: Caps lose to Wakefield in playoffs

Broughton suffered a tough 1-2 loss to Wakefield Friday night to make an early exit from the state playoffs.

The Caps started strong, scoring about six minutes into the game when senior Anne Lassiter Barnes finished off a nice pass from freshman Morgan Holt to give Broughton an early 1-0 lead over the visiting Wolverines.

But Broughton also missed on several scoring chances in the first half, with shots by Holt and senior Meredith Brown going just wide and a shot by Barnes hitting the far post. Later in the half, freshman Allie Brown headed one barely over the goal.

Wakefield turned the game around the second half, scoring two goals within six minutes and forcing sophomore keeper Sydney Spoor to make saves on a handful of other shots. Spoor made a spectacular save on a Wakefield breakaway late in the half to keep the margin at one goal, but the Caps were not able to find the net in the second half.

It was a great season for the Caps. They finished 14-5-1, good for a second-place finish in the Cap 7.

Thanks to seniors Barnes, Brown, Abby Manring, Cate Brewer, Grace Hopkins, Lucy Krueger and Davia Ingram-Terry for all they've done for the Caps the last four years.

CAPS GOLF WINS 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP - PETER FOUNTAIN IS INDIVIDUAL RUNNER-UP

The Broughton Men's Golf Team won the school's 12th NCHSAA state championship on May 7th and 8th on Pinehurst No. 6 in come from behind fashion.

Day 1 of the tournament saw the Caps shoot a solid 303.  Peter Fountain led the team with a 74 on the tight par 72 course.  Patrick Carlin shot 75, Biggs Hawley 76, Connor Jones 78 and Britt Stroud 79.  The Caps were the only team with all five team members under 80.

As the Day 1 scores rolled in, it looked like the Caps were going to be leading the way.  At 303, the Caps had a six stroke lead over Pinecrest and Hough and a seven stroke lead over Myers Park, the three most consistent power teams of the season.  Instead, Ardrey Kell out of Charlotte grabbed the lead at 299, and Cardinal Gibbons posted 3rd at 305.

So rather than a Day 2 direct match-up with 3-time defending champ Pinecrest and Hough, the Caps would play with Ardrey Kell and Cardinal Gibbons, and Pinecrest, Hough and a very potent Myers Park would be on the other side of the course.

As Day 2 progressed, Peter Fountain, Biggs Hawley, Patrick Carlin and Connor Jones were consistent, patient and steady.  The final standings began to take shape as the leading teams came in.  Showing tremendous Senior leadership, on the 18th hole Connor Jones sank a 15 footer for birdie to complete a 76, and Patrick Carlin sank a 10 footer to get up and down for par for 75.  Biggs Hawley made par on 18 to complete a strong round at 76.  In the final group, Peter Fountain had a clutch birdie on the 17th hole to move into red numbers at 1 under par and then a nice par on 18 to finish out a 71.

The Caps were in at 298 for Day 2, 601 for the tournament, ahead of Ardrey Kell by 8 shots and Cardinal Gibbons by 12, and now waited for scores to be posted from the strong teams finishing on the other side of the course.

Hough and Pinecrest posted a couple of higher scores and fell out of contention, despite a 2 under par 70 from AJ Beechler, Pinecrest's individual defending state champion.

Myers Park's scores began to go up on the board, first a 79, then 71, 72 and 73.  It was down to the final score to go up.  A 74 or better from Myers Park's #1 player, and they'd be state champs.  The final score went up as a 78 and the Caps were winners by 3 shots!

With the team title decided, the final order of business was the individual champion.  Peter Fountain's 2nd day 71, and defending champion AJ Beechler's 70, left them tied at 145 for the tournament, with a playoff set to break it.  Playing the 18th hole again, Beechler hit the green in regulation, and Fountain's approach shot came up a bit short.  Fountain missed his putt to get up and down, Beechler two-putted and was crowned the repeat NCHSAA 4A individual champion.  A Senior, Beechler and two of his Senior teammates are headed for Division 1 golf next year.  Sophomore Peter Fountain has two more cracks at individual and team titles.

Broughton was crowned team Champion, with Myers Park as runner-up.  It was the Caps' 3rd title in 7 years under coaches Anderson Marlowe and Steve Smith.  It was the Caps' 9th title in the last 21 years, and the 12th overall since the Caps's three-peat in 1972-1974.

In addition to team and individual trophies, the coaches of the winning team bestowed the 2018 NC Farm Bureau Outstanding Sportsmanship award on Broughton Senior Patrick Carlin!  Congratulations Patrick and well-deserved!

When asked about this latest Broughton Caps golf title, coach Anderson Marlowe said "This one is special because this group of guys may not the most talented team in the state, but they supported each other and had tremendous chemistry, and held together to pull out a great win."

Special thanks to coaches Anderson Marlowe, Steve Smith, Jeff Ferrell and former Broughton golfer (and hoopster) Cyrus Stewart.  Coach Smith took the players to numerous tournaments around the state, and he is very active and highly regarded across NC junior golf.  Coach Stewart enjoyed reliving his glory days of Broughton golf, even bringing his mom to enjoy the Caps' winning final round!  Now that is some Caps loyalty!

A State title is a great way to go out as a Senior!  And for the underclassmen, the only team that can win back-to-back titles is the one who won the last one!

GO CAPS!

Softball: Senior week with Millbrook High School

Broughton Softball entered its final week with a celebration for the seniors. Unfortunately, that celebration did not include any wins again Millbrook, as the CAPS were downed both games by 25-2 and 18-2. But, our seniors continued to perform and remind us how much we are going to miss them next year. Here's a little breakdown....

Mikayla Cunningham. Or, as I like to call her: Money. In. The. Bank. If you were a batter that hit the ball to center field, then you were going back to the dugout.

As the CAPS' centerfielder, Cunningham had a quick jump on the ball. There were few balls hit to center field that did not end up in her glove. She was always on the move. Grounder to second base? There was Cunningham backing up the infield. If she was involved in a play, the batter was either sitting down immediately, because Mikayla's had caught the ball. Or, she was out soon after Mikayla's rocket arm got the ball into the right infielder, and they were tagged out running.

Regan Curtis The CAPS talented catcher was vocal and made sure everyone on the team knew what had been accomplished, what still needed to be accomplished and where the ball needed to go to get it done. She seemed to sit on springs behind the plate, leaping for wild pitches and scrambling for foul balls.

Perhaps home plate was like her second home. Because even when she found herself at the plate with a bat in her hands, she was just as formidable. In fact, she ended her season with a home run in each of her last two games as a CAP.  In fact, one opponent this season chose not to pitch to Curtis at all, because she had already hit two home runs that game! They decided walking her was safer.

Merritt Hicks. The CAPS do-it-all second baseman. Not afraid of getting dirty, Hicks spent as much time colliding with runners trying to steal second base as she did sliding into bases she was stealing herself. As a consistent batter, she could always be counted on for solid, single hits. But, with her speed, she often ended up with a double or a triple when her bat connected.

She was a good heads up player, who was often the magic behind several of the CAPS double plays this season.

Elizabeth Rotchford. Rounding out Broughton's senior players, Rotchford  was the team's omnipresent third baseman. Lunging for foul balls, firing the ball to home for an out, or just keeping the ball infield for quick outs, she was always on her toes.

She was also solid on the bat. Regularly getting on base, she did her job of moving her teammates forward on the plates.

As the rest of their team contemplate a future without these four, it must be said that they led this team to the most wins the CAPS softball team has had in four years. While the team could not boast a winning season, these senior's legacy will be providing the building blocks for future success. Cunningham, Curtis, Hicks and Rotchford, THANK YOU!

May each of you have great success in your futures at college and beyond!

Tennis Regionals: Caps Dominate 1st Round, Falls Short 2nd

The NCHSAA Regional Tennis Championship was held today, May 4th, with Broughton’s Joey Burroughs and Gustav Jelert competing in the doubles division and E.J. Mildwurf playing in singles.  Both teams soared through their first round of matches at the Millbrook Tennis Center with the Cap’s doubles team beating Knightdale and Mildwurf winning his single’s match against New Bern. Round 2 proved more difficult for both teams competing against seeds from Enloe and Wakefield, resulting in losses for BHS.

Broughton closes out their season ranked #8 in the PrepsNow (News and Observer) top 25 boys tennis rankings, out of 20 NC counties.  Special thanks to our outstanding head coach Barry Mann and assistant Bill White.  What a fantastic and successful season for Broughton’s Men’s Tennis.

Soccer: Caps finish season with comeback win

With a pair of second-half goals, senior Cate Brewer led Broughton to a dramatic comeback victory over Sanderson Wednesday night to wrap up the regular season.

The 2-1 win on Sanderson's Senior Night gave the Caps a season sweep of the Spartans. The Caps finished 10-2 in conference play, good for second place in the Cap 7, and now wait to learn their seeding for the state playoffs.

Cate Brewer
Broughton was frustrated for much of the game, unable to find the back of the net despite dominating possession. The Caps had multiple chances, but shots by senior Meredith Brown and sophomore Elizabeth Gilchrist were just wide or high of the goal.

Fortunately, the Caps back line played stiff defense, with junior Abby Finan making a handful of key stops in the first half.

But it was Sanderson that scored first, off a free kick about 10 minutes into the second half. The Caps kept attacking, though, and finally tied the score at 1-1 when Brewer headed in a long ball from Brown in the 68th minute.

A shot by senior Anne Lassiter Barnes about a minute later came close to giving the Caps the lead, but it bounced off the far post to a Sanderson keeper. Then Broughton's keeper, sophomore Sydney Spoor, made a scrambling save on a Sanderson attack in the 70th minute.

But Brewer scored again with about three minutes remaining in the game to give Broughton the 2-1 win.

Earlier, the Broughton JV lost 2-3 to Sanderson. Minta Brice and Ashton Kendall scored for the Caps.

Caps Golf Wins Regional Title - Peter Fountain is Individual Champion

The NCHSAA East Regional golf tournament was held Tuesday, May 1st at Raleigh Country Club.  Broughton readily bested the other 8 teams in the field and will head to the NCHSAA State golf tournament at Pinehurst No. 6 next Monday and Tuesday.

The weather for the Regional was ideal which allowed the tournament staff to set up tough tournament conditions.  The Donald Ross greens at Raleigh Country Club were lightning fast, and leaving the ball above the hole was a costly mistake.

Peter Fountain is East Regional Champion

Peter Fountain was the only player in the field to master the conditions, firing an even par 72 and running away from the field like Secretariat at the Belmont.  Second place was shared by the Caps' Biggs Hawley and Caleb Kimbrough of New Bern at 77, and only 2 other players in the field of over 60 players broke 80.

Caps are Regional Team Champs - New Bern and Athens Drive also advance to States

Broughton's team total was a solid 308.  In addition to the 72 from Peter Fountain and the 77 from Biggs Hawley, Patrick Carlin added a 78 and Connor Jones 81.

New Bern HS placed second at 326 and Athens Drive third at 353.  Each will also advance to the State tournament.

McCreery magnanimous about delayed tee time

In a parallel development, American Idol Scotty McCreery hoped to get in a few holes at RCC, but true to his reputation was graceful and magnanimous with the delay caused by the tournament and took time out to support the Caps!

On to States!

The 4A championship field that will compete for the 2018 NCHSAA Golf Championship consists of the top 3 finishers from each Regional championship:

East Region - Broughton, New Bern, Athens Drive
Mideast Region - Apex Friendship, Green Hope, Cardinal Gibbons
Midwest Region - Pinecrest, RJ Reynolds, Porter Ridge
West Region - Hough, Myers Park, Ardrey Kell
