The NCHSAA 4A Brackets were finalized at 12P and here's the path for Broughton - seeded 14th

First round: Saturday, November 3 (time TBD)

Home game against #19 Wakefield (10-9-1) from the NAC VI.

Second round:  Tuesday, November 6 (time TBD)

If we win, we play #3 Heritage (15-3-4) at Heritage from the NAC VI

Third round: Thursday, November 8 (time TBD)

If we win, we will more than likely play the winner of the #6 Holly Springs/#11 Wake Forest game.

If we are fortunate enough to win these three, we'll be in the fourth round on Saturday, the 10th.

(The other Cap7 spots were: #2 Cardinal Gibbons, #10 Enloe, #13 Millbrook, #15 Leesville Road and #20 Sanderson.)

First things first, time to get ready for Wakefield...

BOYS SOCCER: #11 Enloe Defeats #12 Broughton - Clinches 2nd Place

Going to keep this update short and sweet.

#11 Enloe (15-5-1, 8-4) rode an early wave of goals and beat the #12 Caps (13-8-1, 7-5) soundly in all areas to win 5-2 on their home field to clinch the second automatic berth from the Cap7 and move the Caps to the at-large field for the playoffs.

Broughton's goals came from Andrew Rossetti (assist Lucas Beeson) and Duncan Coffey (assist Andrew Rossetti).

Ryan Meredith played an amazing game in the net and stopped multiple chances (as well as a PK) to keep the score 5-2.

The very, very good news is that the slate is wiped clean and we open up the playoffs on Saturday. With our talent and firepower, we will make some noise.

Will have a separate post once the brackets are announced.

BOYS SOCCER: White & Rossetti Prove Too Much for SE Raleigh 9-2

In the continuation of a game started on September 12th, #18 Broughton (13-7-1, 7-4) used a combined 7 goals from Seniors John White and Andrew Rossetti to overwhelm SE Raleigh by the score of 9-2 and set up an epic showdown on Monday night at Enloe for second place in the Cap7.

First Half (continuation):

In our first meeting, John White had scored within 2 minutes and we were 1-0 us with 35 minutes left in the first half. The Caps wasted no time as Senior Ivey O'Brien headed it home to make it 2-0 - assist to Andrew. After that, John White continued his amazing streak as he scored his first of the day and second for the game - then after a SE Raleigh goal, John scored again off an assist from his brother Jack to make it 4-1. In the middle of those goals for John, Junior Sam Vlahoplus stopped a PK and the halftime score was 4-1.

Second Half:

Broughton wasted no time in the second half and Andrew got his first of the game off an assist from John White. Then Andrew returned the favor to give John 3 on the day and 4 for the game (and 30 for the season...more info on that in another post).

Andrew then got his second off a nice assist from Senior Lucas Beeson to make it 7-1 Caps. Then, Junior Alex Dunne got on the scoreboard off an assist from Wiley Eubank to make it 8-1. SE put up a fight all night, regardless of the score, and had a free kick saved by Senior Hector Martinez-Porras scored on a breakaway to make it 8-2. Then, with less than a minute left, Andrew got his 3rd of the game off an assist from TZOo to give him 3 for the day (and 20 for the season...more info on that in another post). Final 9-2 Caps.

Next Up:

So, we did what we needed and have put ourselves in position on Monday evening to play Enloe for the second automatic spot in the playoffs. And while the first game with them was definitely our way, let me show you what they've done since that game: 4 W in a row including 2 against Leesville Road and 1 against Cardinal Gibbons. The game on Monday will be an even, hard-fought battle that will be an amazing test in preparation of the playoffs. THIS GAME is one that you will remember. Less get it.

BOYS SOCCER: #18 Caps Defeat #14 Millbrook on Senior Night

Whatever John and Ashley White are feeding John, I'd like to request an order for the remainder of the team because it is working. Riding another top performance by John White (3 goals!!) and strong overall play from the entire team, the #18 Caps (12-7-1, 6-4) upset #14 Millbrook (11-8-1, 7-5) by the score of 3-2 to keep our dreams alive for an automatic bid to the playoffs.

Starters: Martinez (GK), Gasia, Hunter, Eubank, Willis, Pelletier, Coffey, O'Brien (c), Rossetti (c), Beeson (c), White

Thank you Seniors!!

First Half:

Unlike games past, the Caps started out strong and took it to the Wildcats from the opening whistle. John White proved to be too much for their defense and out boys decided the best thing to do was to get it to him as much as possible. That plan worked twice as Senior Andrew Rossetti found John with long balls and John did all the work beating the keeper with his right and left foot and we were up 2-0.

Millbrook got themselves together nicely and over the next 20 minutes of the first half got themselves right back into the game and scored off a free kick and a rebound from a corner kick to tie it up 2-2.

The last 10 minutes were see saw and thanks to a great save by Senior Hector Martinez-Porras - we kept it tied at the break.

Second Half:

Just like our previous games, Broughton proved stronger in the second half and really controlled play for the final frame. Andrew saw a shot saved by the Millbrook GK's head and Lucas had a header saved normally in the first 20 minutes.

The backline shut down the Millbrook offense in the second half and credit goes to Seniors Logan Hunter, Carter Gasia and Junior Jack Eubank who did a great job.

Then, with 4 minutes left, the John White show played its final act and he took a pass from Lucas Beeson and then John beat a defender and then rifled it past the GK and we went up 3-2 and closed the game out.

Next Up:

Ok, so we took care of the first step and beat Millbrook. That puts them at 7-5 and tied with Leesville.

So, for second place:

Enloe: 7-4 (who beat Gibbons)
Broughton: 6-4

We finish the game with SE Raleigh today at 4p (and the score 1-0 Caps). If we win that game, then the game on Monday with Enloe is for second place.

BOYS SOCCER: Cap7 Soccer Playoff Scenarios (October 23)

With 3 games to play for Broughton, the Caps control their own destiny for an automatic bid. This is how the it is shaping up in the #Cap7 for the Top 5 teams.

First Place: Clinched
Cardinal Gibbons High School
15-2-2, 10-1
Games remaining: @Enloe on Wednesday

Second Place:
Millbrook High School
11-7-1, 7-4
Games Remaining: @Broughton on Wednesday

Third Place:
Enloe High School
13-5-1, 6-4
Games Remaining: v CGHS on Wednesday and v Broughton on Monday

Fourth Place:
Leesville Road High School
10-8-1, 7-5
Games Remaining: none

Fifth Place:
Broughton High School
11-7-1. 5-4
Games Remaining: v Millbrook on Wednesday, v SE Raleigh on Thursday, @Enloe on Monday

So, what does this mean for us.

1. Win all 3: we will be 8-4 in the conference and will have clinched the second automatic spot for the playoffs.

2. Lose to Millbrook, beat SE and Enloe: we would be tied for third with Leesville Road and Enloe (if Enloe beats CGHS).

3. Lose to Enloe, beat SE & Millbrook: we would be tied with Leesville and Millbrook and possibly Enloe (if Enloe beats CGHS). In that case it would go to tie breakers.

4. Lose to Enloe & Millbrook, beat SE Raleigh: we would be 6-6 and probably battling Enloe (if they beat CGHS) for 4th or 5th.

5. Lose all 3: well, that would stink.

My vote is lets make it easy and win all 3 and come in second. Anything other than that, we tempt fate.

BOYS SOCCER: #18 Broughton Spoils Senior Night For Sanderson 4-2

In a game that was chippy to say the least, #18 Broughton (11-7-1, 5-4) used three first half goals and some strong defending to defeat the Sanderson Spartans on their Senior Night by the score of 4-2.

Starters: Vlahoplus (GK), Gasia, Hunter, Eubank, O'Brien (c), Willis, Pelletier, Coffey, Rossetti (c), Beeson (c), White

First Half:

It was an uneven, slow start for the Caps as Sanderson matched our intensity (given it was Senior Night - no surprise). But after 10 minutes, the Caps took a 1-0 lead as Seniors Lucas Beeson and John White combined for the goal with John getting his 23rd of the season. Sanderson answered quickly on their own combination and after 15 minutes we were tied 1-1.

Then Broughton started to control possession and it resulted in 2 goals over the next few minutes: the first came from Senior Ivey O'Brien who took a pass from Junior Parker Willis and did the work to make it 2-1 Caps. Then, Junior Jack Eubank (who had the free kick working last night) hit the post on an offering and Sophomore Weston Szarek was in the right place and cleaned it up for his first goal of the season! 3-1 good guys.

In what we hope doesn't become a theme, a curious PK went against us for what seemed to all observers to be just good defense. Nonetheless, it was called and SHS finished nicely and halftime saw us 3-2 on the plus side.

Second Half:

More credit to Coach Cantrell as for the 4th game in a row, the Caps came out and owned the second half. Lots of possession and lots of control. Seniors Andrew Rossetti and Lucas Beeson were getting the "three year varsity" treatment by the Spartans and both got yellow cards for defending themselves against aggressive play.

Then, Jack Eubank had a lovely free kick to beat the excellent Spartan GK and we went up 4-2.

Lastly, the defense kept SHS off the scoreboard in the second half led by Junior GK Sam Vlahoplus and Jack Eubank and Seniors Logan Hunter, Carter Gasia and Duncan Coffey. Final 4-2 good guys.

Next Up:

The Caps control their destiny to get the second automatic bid from the Cap7. However, the road will not be easy.

WEDNESDAY: Senior Night v Millbrook
THURSDAY: HOME v SE Raleigh
MONDAY: @ Enloe

They can do this.

BOYS SOCCER: #15 Caps Lose A Heartbreaker To #4 Cardinal Gibbons

"Don't say it wasn't a PK, Don't say it wasn't a PK.." Whoops, there was my inner monologue become an outer monologue.

In a game that saw the #15 Caps (10-7-1, 4-4) come back from a two goal deficit to tie up the #4 Crusaders (14-2-2, 9-1) in the second half, the Crusaders got a late PK and rode that to the 3-2 victory clinching the Cap7 Conference title.

Starters: Vlahoplus (GK), Coffey, Eubank, Hunter, Gasia, O'Brien (c), Willis, Pelletier, Rossetti (c), White, Beeson (c)

First Half:

It was another odd first half that saw the Caps play well and control the ball for periods of time, but find itself down two goals. Gibbons got one on a rocket left foot shot that Sam had no chance to stop and then, after 10 minutes of pressure (and shots from John White (Sr) and Andrew Rossetti (Sr)), get a scrum goal with 20 seconds left in the half.

Gibbons had a few more chances that were very nicely saved by Sam Vlahoplus (Jr) and we ended 0-2.

Second Half:

Coach Cantrell's halftime talk definitely got the boys attention and they came out very strong to start the second half. The pressure finally paid off as Carter Gasia (Sr) played a lovely long ball to Duncan Coffey (Sr) down the left side. Duncan got it to John White. John sauced two defenders and found Andrew Rossetti alone in the middle and he beat the Gibbons GK with his left foot and we were 1-2.

Not 10 minutes later, John played a ball to Lucas Beeson who delicately laid it off to a streaking Andrew who beat two Crusaders and slotted it home for his 17th goal and tie it up 2-2. The stadium was crazy and the momentum was on our side.

However, Broughton couldn't build on the tie as a few minutes later, Gibbons was awarded a very weak PK that was unfortunately not finished with a weak PK attempt as they powered it top corner to go up 2-3.

The last 10 minutes was frantic but the Caps could not muster up a real strong chance and we were defeated by one goal.

Next Up:

We split our games against the top two teams in the Cap7 so we control our destiny to get to second place (and an automatic bid). This week we have 3 games: @Sanderson on Monday, Home v Millbrook (Senior Night) on Wednesday and Home v SE Raleigh on Thursday. We need to get 9 points this week - no exceptions. It won't be easy, but it wouldn't be worthwhile if it wasn't.

Let's go.

BOYS SOCCER: Seniors Power #15 Caps To Upset Victory At #6 Leesville Road

Finally.

After an almost three season drought (and a testament to the quality of the LRHS program), #15 Broughton (10-6-1, 4-3) rode heroic performances from the Senior class and upset the #6 Pride (9-6-1, 6-3) in overtime at Leesville Road 2-1.

Starters: Meredith (GK), Pelletier, Hunter, Eubank, Coffey, Willis, Meredith, O'Brien, Rossetti, Beeson, White

First Half:

Broughton came out strong to start the game and controlled possession and opportunities in the first 10 minutes. Seniors John White and Andrew Rossetti both had chances to score that were stopped by the excellent Pride GK. Then, and against the run of play, Leesville played a long ball to their striker that took a deflection and he slotted it past Ryan Meredith to make it 0-1.

Leesville got on the front foot after that goal and evened the play out. Junior Jack Eubank had a great free kick that the Leesville GK made an equally great save on to keep them in the lead. Senior Lucas Beeson was an absolute beast in the middle taking on all Pride defenders that wanted a piece of him. Broughton tried to muster a few chances but couldn't connect and halftime saw the score 0-1.

Second Half:

If Coach Cantrell drew up the second half plan, it was perfect as within 20 seconds of the start of the second half, Senior Bryce Meredith made a long run and played it into the path of the Cap7 leading scorer John White and he coolly slotted it home to tie the score up 1-1. Game on.

However, Leesville proved why it was ranked #6 and had several strong chances in the next 20-25 minutes, including one point blank header that I am still not sure how Ryan Meredith kept out. Seniors Duncan Coffey and (Man of the Match) Logan Hunter did a great job thwarting other Pride chances.

The last 10 minutes of the game was frantic as both sides didn't want to go to overtime or PK's.  As well, Senior Ivey O'Brien continued to press and make runs down the right side to the point of exhaustion and John White hit the post and Andrew Rossetti forced several good saves from their GK. However, neither side could score and we went to OT 1-1.

First OT:

From the start of the overtime, Broughton took it to Leesville. Lots of runs and chances from both another Jack Eubank free kick as well as a shot with 5 seconds from Andrew that was just tipped clear. 1-1.

Second OT:

It was quickly evident that Leesville saw the play turning against them and was playing for a PK shootout. The Caps kept the pressure on and was rewarded with 52 seconds left as John White rifled a shot towards the Pride GK who made a save but couldn't push it past the oncoming run from Bryce and he tapped it in to give us the 2-1 lead. His dive into the pole vault mat celebration was excellent and worth the yellow card.

Leesville could muster no shots in the remaining seconds and the Caps held on to win 2-1.

 Next Up:

This was a huge victory for the Caps, both for beating Leesville for the first time in six meetings, but secondly, keeping hope alive to move up to second (or first) and receive an automatic bid for the playoffs.

So, we need all Caps to come out to Broughton Stadium on Wednesday at 630P and cheer on the Caps as they take on the #4 ranked Crusaders from Cardinal Gibbons. Let's do this.

BOYS SOCCER: #19 Caps Upset #5 Enloe Thanks To The White Brothers

If only all the games were like last night.

In a game that saw Broughton (9-6-1, 3-3) get on top of #5 Enloe (10-5-1, 3-4) early and often by playing their most complete game of the season, the Caps used 6 goals from the White brothers (John 4, Jack 2) and 2 more from an honorary White sibling (Andrew Rossetti 2) to upset #5 Enloe 8-1.

Starters: Meredith (GK), Eubank, Hunter, Coffey, Pelletier, O'Brien, Meredith, Willis, Rossetti, Beeson, White

First Half:

Broughton controlled the play from the start and a nice give and go between Lucas Beeson (Sr) and John White (Sr) resulted in John's first goal and putting us up 1-0. The second goal was set up by great effort from Price Pelletier (So) who charged from the back and got the ball to John who made a pretty left footed shot to go 2-0.

Then Andrew Rossetti (Sr) decided to be an honorary White sibling and got the next two for the Caps (his 15th goal of the season). First one from a long ball from John White and the second was a nice pass from Jack Eubank (Jr) to Andrew who took the ball (and the goalie) out wide and then curled a floater to the net from a tight angle. 4-0.

John White finished off the first half by drawing a foul and then powering home the PK to make it 5-0 Caps. That gave John his 20th goal of the season!!!

Second Half:

Coach Cantrell warned the boys that the Eagles would come out fired up and they did - forcing Ryan Meredith into a few saves. But then, Bryce Meredith (Sr) made a great end-line run and played a cross to John White and he buried the header for his 21st and make it 6-0. Mercifully, Coach took John out after that goal, but he brought in younger brother Jack White (So).

And after Enloe got one back, Jack got the final 2 goals: the first coming from Ivey O'Brien (So) after a long run and the second from TZOo (Jr) to make the final score 8-1.

Next Up:

We have a game scheduled on Thursday against SE Raleigh, but the current forecast path of Hurricane Michael makes it very, very unlikely that we'll play.

If that game gets canceled, then we face an amazingly difficult week next week as play @ #7 Leesville Road on Monday and then home against #4 Cardinal Gibbons on Wednesday. If the boys can get 6 points next week, that would be huge to set up the final month of the season.

Women's Golf ~ Last Match at North Ridge

BHS Golfers ~ Biggs H. (assisting), Ann Frances L., Lucy L., Kate L., Lilly G., & Sarah W.

Lady Caps competed in their last match of the season on Tues., Oct. 2nd at North Ridge Country Club. They placed 4th at this match with Sarah Wallace leading the Caps with a fanstastic score of 41. Special thanks to Coach Farrell and Biggs H. for filling in for Coach Smith at this match. BHS finished in 3rd place for the Cap-7 conference. Good luck to Sarah Wallace, Kate Livesay, Ann Frances Lakins as they advance to Regionals in a week at Landfall!

BOYS SOCCER: #19 Caps Ride Another John White Performance to Victory

I won't lie, it looked rough for a little while. But the #19 Caps (8-6-1, 2-3) used another 5 goal performance from Senior John White to mercy rule the Bulldogs of SE Raleigh by the score of 11-2.

Starters:
Martinez (GK), Eubank, Hunter, Coffey, O'Brien, Pelletier, Szarek, Gasia, Oo, Rossetti, White

First Half (aka The John White Show):

As stated above, SE Raleigh came out strong and got a 1-0 lead on us. Not shortly after, John White with some sweet 1v1 moves beat several defenders and tied the score up (assist Ivey O'Brien). Then SE made it 2-1 and that finally got the team going. John made a long run and beat the GK to make it 2-2. Jack Eubank played a nice long ball to John who made quick effort of the defense and we were 3-2 up. Right before halftime, John got fouled in the box and then appropriately finished off the PK and the score was 4-2 at halftime.

Second Half:

John was kind enough to let others in on the act and they happily obliged. First, Andrew Rossetti scored his 12th and 13th goals of the season in quick time thanks to assists from Bryce Meredith and Ivey O'Brien. Then, in the longest goal of the season I think, Jack Eubank poured gasoline on his 4 point night with a long range bomb from 25 yards out and the score was 7-2.

Several players from the JV were called up to Varsity for this game and began to make an impact. John White got his 5th (and final) goal of the evening off an assist from Wiley Eubank (Fr). John is now at 17 goals for the season. Then Weston Szarek (So) played a long ball to TZOo who hit a cracker to the top corner and the score was 9-2.

The last 2 goals were courtesy of Bryce Meredith. His first was from nice pass from Sanzhar (Fr) and Bryce beat 2 people and chipped the GK. Then, Bryce muscled his defender and made a long run to beat the GK. Assist to Jack Eubank. 11-2 final.

Next Up:

No rest for the Caps as we face #5 Enloe at Broughton tonight in a game that could allow the Caps to get to .500 in conference and set themselves up for a great second half of the season.

Prior to the match, the Lady Caps celebrated the four seniors on the team: Katie Burroughs, Co-Captain Meg Hardesty, Lily Roth and Co-Captain Becket Waters. These seniors have contributed much to the team in their four years and it will be sad to see them go. All seniors played both singles and doubles today. The Lady Caps swept the singles courts including a great tiebreak win by Becket Waters at the number one court. Waters teamed up with her other co-captain Meg Hardesty  and dominated their doubles opponents at the number one court, 8-1. Seniors Katie Burroughs and Lily Roth paired at the number two doubles court and almost added a win, eventually falling 7-9. The Lady Caps enter the Cap 7 conference tournament next week at 8-4 in the league and 9-5 overall. Come out next Tuesday and Wednesday to Millbrook Exchange Park and support the Lady Caps in the Cap 7 Women's tennis tournament.

Sanderson Squeaks by Lady Caps Tennis

The Broughton Lady Caps Women's tennis team hosted the Sanderson Lady Spartans at Broughton.  The Caps split the match 3-3 with the Spartans at the end of singles play with wins from Maia Stewart, Meg Hardesty and Addie Camak. Katie Burroughs had a heated match, going to tiebreakers in both sets then dropping the match tiebreaker. Way to fight Katie!  Meg Hardesty and Maia Stewart continued their winning ways at the number two doubles court beating their Sanderson opponents 8-3. Unfortunately the Spartans overpowered the Caps at the one and three double courts to take the win 5-4. The Lady Caps are now 8-5 overall and 8-4 in the Cap 7 conference, finishing the season in third place overall in the conference. Come support the Lady Caps in their last home match of the year against Pinecrest at 4pm on Thursday! Come early as Seniors Katie Burroughs, Meg Hardesty, Lily Roth and Becket Waters play their final matches as Lady Caps! We will miss them as they move onto the next phase in their careers.

BOYS SOCCER: #15 Caps Slow Start Proves Costly At #10 Millbrook

I am a big believer that multiple things can be true at the same time. For example:

  • Millbrook deserved to win yesterday against the Caps
  • The referee was the worst seen in a long, long time

So, in a game decided in a 15 minute flurry in the first half, Broughton (7-6-1, 1-3) gave up 4 goals to only see their valiant second half comeback thwarted by Millbrook (8-5-1, 4-2) by the score of 5-3.

FIRST HALF:

On the narrow Wildcat pitch, the game saw even play and even a few chances by the Caps. Unfortunately, as referenced above, Millbrook threw down 4 goals in 15 minutes to take a 4-0 to halftime. It is hard to describe what went wrong except to say....everything. Several Caps received yellow cards for what most reasonable people would say were weak to say the least. BUT, you have to control your emotions and deal with what is ahead of you - and in the first half - we did not do that.

SECOND HALF:

Coach Cantrell abandoned the game plan and went to throwing up long balls to John White, Lucas Beeson and Andrew Rossetti. The plan worked as Broughton was the beneficiary of not one, but two PK's - both converted by Lucas Beeson (one on a rebound and another on the kick)

One of the PK's was a textbook red card to Millbrook for pulling Lucas down on a last man breakaway. The referee chose to ignore the rules of the game and didn't even card the defender. He then proceeded to tell Lucas to "stop playing so hard". I will comment no further on that statement....

At that point, Broughton pushed and pushed for a third only to find no release and with 5 minutes left, Millbrook got their 5th to make it 5-2. John White took the team lead on goals with his 12th (a nice shot from the right side) and the final was 5-3 to Millbrook.

NEXT GAMES:

It gets no easier for the Caps moving forward. The next 5 games in order are:

@ #1 Enloe (makeup)
@ SE Raleigh
#1 Enloe
@#8 Leesville Road
#7 Cardinal Gibbons

Need to shake things up to right the ship and get back to .500 in conference.

Women's Tennis Wipes Out Millbrook Wildcats

The Broughton Lady Caps travelled to the home of the Millbrook Wildcats Women's team today.  For the fourth match this year, the Caps swept all courts to win the match 9-0. All players showed dominant play over their Millbrook opponents. In a roster switch, Senior Lily Roth played the number six court and showed her senior finesse in her 6-1, 6-3 win.  The Lady Caps are now 8-4 overall and 8-3 in the Cap 7 conference. The Caps face Sanderson at home tomorrow at 3:30pm and Pinecrest at home on Thursday at 4pm. Thursday is also Senior Day honoring Seniors Katie Burroughs, Meg Hardesty, Lily Roth and Becket Waters. All of the seniors have been on the Lady Caps tennis team for four years! Come out and support the Lady Caps tennis team!
