Peter Fountain Runs Away with 4A Golf Title - Caps Team Ties 4th

Congratulations to Broughton golfer Peter Fountain, who put together a historic performance to win the NCHSAA 4A Individual State Championship by 8 shots over his nearest competitor!

Peter Fountain, 2019 NCHSAA 4A State Champion

The NCHSAA 4A State Championship was contested May 13th and 14th at Pinehurst No. 8 (6,694 yards, par 72).  Myers Park of Charlotte won its first state championship since 1956, shooting 604 over 2 days to top Day One leader New Bern by 2 shots.

The Broughton Caps finished tied 4th with Pinecrest, six shots back at 610.  Cardinal Gibbons finished 3rd at 609.  While Peter Fountain spotted his teammates a lot of strokes, only James Carlin (78-76) played well enough to provide the assistance needed to allow the Caps to defend their 2018 title.  The rest of the team ran into trouble on either the front or back nine each day to push up their scores.

Champion Peter Fountain flanked by his teammates.

Fountain's performance in the championship, 69-68 for a total of 7 under par, was rather historic.  Only 7 players have shot better than 137 in two days of any NC High School golf championship, and this year's 2nd place finisher was 8 shots back at 1 over par.  And while the weather was beautiful, a persistent and gusty wind took a toll on the rest of the field.  The winning team score of 604 was the highest since 2002, and Myers Park's No. 1 player, a soon-to-be Division 1 college golfer, was 17 over par.

For Fountain, it was a great way to cap off a tremendous season that also included an East Region championship, wins at the Neuse High School Invitational and the Pinehurst High School Invitational, along with being Cap 7 Player of the Year.  Fountain was well under par in all of these competitions.  Peter joins a list of 4A State Champions that has included PGA players Carl Petterson, Brendon Todd, Webb Simpson, Grayson Murray and Doc Redman over the past 20 years or so.  Way to go Peter!

Coaches and Players on the 10th Tee at Pinehurst No. 8

For the Caps team, States were undoubtedly a disappointing end to what was otherwise the best regular season in years.  The Caps won the season-opening Keith Hills Kickoff, was the top NC team at the Anderson Creek High School Elite, finished 2nd by a stroke at the Carmel High School Challenge, won the Neuse High School Invitational, finished 3rd at the Pinehurst High School Invitational, and won the NC High School Invitational.

And this in a year when the best teams in the state, public or private, with the exception of 3A Charlotte Catholic, were all in the 4A division.  All 5 tournament starters, and all 6 conference starters, made big contributions to the team's success.  It might best be said that the team simply peaked too early, as golf is a game of ups and downs.

Special thanks to Coaches Anderson Marlowe, Steve Smith and Jeff Ferrell.  Coach Marlowe brought a tough competitive edge that spurred on the players, Coach Smith was selfless in the time and travel he gave to the team, and the addition of Coach Ferrell for the last 4 years has been very welcome, with his calm demeanor and the respect he has earned in decades of Broughton basketball excellence.

Returners James Carlin, Jennings Glenn and Frank Gilliam

Best of luck to outgoing seniors, Biggs Hawley, Britt Stroud, Carter Dickinson, Smith Brewer and Wooten Wheless.  The Caps also bid a fond farewell to Peter Fountain, who will enroll early to prepare to play golf for the University of North Carolina.

Returners for next year include James Carlin, Frank Gilliam, Jennings Glenn and Will Mitchell.  For Broughton Golf, the history is impressive and the future is always bright!

Lady Laxers End Season with A Stunner at East Chapel Hill

May 10, 2019

Lady Laxers End Season with A Stunner at East Chapel Hill
The Lady Caps traveled to East Chapel Hill for the quarterfinals of the state playoffs Friday night. This was the closest game of the year for the Caps, and it certainly was an exciting contest for a large crowd.  East Chapel Hill controlled the draw in the first ten minutes of the game.  The Caps also committed some costly turnovers in the first half.   These two factors allowed East Chapel Hill to take a 6-4 lead into the half.  The Caps didn’t play their best lacrosse in the first half and they faced a lot of adversity in the opening period.

Coach Yoder was able to get the girls focused during halftime. Broughton came out in the second half with a huge amount of confidence.  The passing was much better, the teamwork and offensive sets were very efficient.  The Caps controlled the draw.  Stella Smith had 6 draw wins on the night, and most of those came in the second half.  This allowed the Caps to roll off 5 straight goals and take a commanding 9-6 lead with 9:00 to play.   The story on the night was the incredible goalie play of Lauren Bryner.   Bryner reeled in 15 saves on the night for the Caps.  Broughton got some untimely penalties called in the last ten minutes of the game (while none were called on East CH, I mean 0, really 0). This resulted in having to play portions of the last ten minutes one and two players down.  Spotting East Chapel Hill two people proved costly as East rolled off 3 goals in a 4:00 span. They scored the go-ahead goal with 1:30 left to play.  This girls never gave up, and they managed to get a takeaway in the final 30 seconds and advance the ball the length of the field for a close shot with 7 seconds to play.  The East goalie made a great stop, and the contest ended with a 10-9 final score.
The Caps were led by Addie Camak with 4 goals.  Margaret Anne Warner had 3 goals,  Bailey Burgess and Emily Clark Joyner had 1 goal apiece.  Warner scooped up 4 ground balls, and Greer Eckerd had 2 ground balls.  Eckerd and Abigail Pugh played some great defense for the Caps to assist Bryner in dealing with the East attack.

The loss ends the season for the Lady Caps with a 13-4 record.  Thanks to Coach Yoder and her dedicated staff for their leadership and hard work this year.  Thanks to a special group of Seniors, Emily Clark Joyner, Margaret Anne Warner, Ashley Soltis, Greer Eckard and EJ Fuller that have left a lasting impact on the program. These girls have set a standard for the program that can be built on for years to come. The future is bright for the Broughton Lady Laxers!
