Lady Caps Crush Crusaders

Senior Co-Captain Meg Hardesty and Sophomore Maia Stewart pose after sealing the win for the Lady Caps with their doubles win against Cardinal Gibbons.
The Broughton Lady Caps tennis team took on the Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders today at home. The Lady Caps were out for the win today as they captured the singles courts at the one, two three and four positions. Seniors Becket Waters and Meg Hardesty, as well as sophomores Trevlyn Roberts and Maia Stewart, won their respective courts. Meg Hardesty won in an exciting tiebreak playing over two hours. The Lady Caps played their proverbial hearts out in doubles. Maia Stewart and Meg Hardesty cinched the win over Cardinal Gibbons with their doubles win. Becket Waters and Trevlyn Roberts staged a great comeback on the number one doubles court but fell short in their tiebreaker. The Broughton Lady Caps ended the streak of 109 conference wins for the Gibbons Women that had stood since 2009! The Lady Caps are now 3-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Next week they travel to Sanderson on Tuesday and meet Millbrook at home on Thursday. Let's go CAPS!!!!

BOYS SOCCER: Caps Put 6 In The Net To Beat Corinth Holders

The second time was the charm for the Caps (3-2-1, 0-0) as they used 2 goals from Seniors Bryce Meredith and Andrew Rossetti and goals from the White Brothers (John & Jack) to put Corinth Holders (2-3-1, 0-0) away early and often winning on the road 6-1.

The boys struck first in the first of several great team goals as Lucas Beeson played a great cross through the box that Andrew Rossetti dummied (which means he ran to the ball looking like he was going to kick it and then purposely let it run through his legs) which drew the two defenders and then left John White wide open and he curled it beautifully past the GK to make it 1-0.

After Corinth Holders scored on an unlucky PK, the Caps went to work. Senior Captain Ivey O'Brien absolutely ripped a volley from outside the 18 that was saved by the GK and then finished nicely by Rossetti to make it 2-1. Lucas Beeson got his second assist playing another nice cross to Andrew Rossetti whose left footed rocket was too hard for the GK and we were 3-1 up. Finally, right before halftime, another nice team goal as Rossetti made a long run down the right side and crossed it to Junior Alex Dunne who then set it up perfectly for Bryce Meredith and he made it 4-1.

The second half was one way traffic for the Good Guys and we ran another "dummy" play to perfection as Andrew Rossetti played a low, hard corner kick through the box which Sophomore Price Pelletier dummied and it left Bryce wide open for his second to make it 5-1. Then, with less than five minutes to go, Andrew Rossetti made a run and played it to Sophomore Jack White and he powered it home to end the game at 6-1 Caps.

Lots of strong performances from the Caps, including our first look at Senior GK Ryan Meredith and Junior Parker Willis who ran the midfield very well so Bryce could go attack.

We are back on the road Thursday against Woods Charter in Chapel Hill. One more win before Labor Day Weekend would be great.

Lady Caps Pierce Leesville Road Pride

In a last minute switch of location, the Broughton Lady Caps met the Leesville Road Pride at Broughton. The Pride's home courts, like the Caps, have been undergoing renovation but were not ready for play. Luckily, Broughton's courts were ready. At match time, the head coaches determined the weather warranted pro sets in both singles and doubles to limit heat-related issues. The Lady Caps played extremely strong to dominate the Pride 5-1 in singles. However, the Pride took over doubles and swept all three courts. Dominant play from senior co-captains Becket Waters and Meg Hardesty in singles was fun for Caps fan to enjoy. Sophomores Maia Stewart and Trevlyn Roberts also enjoyed powerful singles wins along with senior Katie Burroughs. The Caps are 2-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. They are at home against Cardinal Gibbons tomorrow at 4pm. Come out and support the Lady Caps!

SINGLES:
B. Waters (BHS) def. H. Alvis (LR) {Ret} 7-4; T. Roberts (BHS) def. C. Clark (LR) 10-3; M. Stewart (BHS) def. I. Michalakis (LR) 10-2; M. Hardesty (BHS) def. A. Stilwell (LR) 10-7; K. Burroughs (BHS) def. M. Campbell (LR) 10-6; C. Stilwell (LR) def. A. Camak (BHS) 10-4

DOUBLES:

BOYS SOCCER: Rossetti Named to High School All-American Watch List

It was just learned that Senior Midfielder Andrew Rossetti was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Fall 2018 High School All-American Watch List. He was one of only four (4) players from North Carolina to be extended that honor.

Congratulations to Andrew and here's hoping he can earn that final spot on the All-American team.

BOYS SOCCER: Caps Give Up Late Goals To Tie Panther Creek 2-2

In a game that wasn't as close as the final score indicated and without two starters taking the SAT, Broughton (2-2-1, 0-0) controlled the play and went up by two goals only to see Panther Creek (1-1-1, 0-0) fight back to earn a draw on Saturday at the NCSCA Kickoff Classic.

The first half, while scoreless, was dominated by the Caps as they had numerous chances to get an early goal. Sophomore Omar Stallings, who got the start, was especially dangerous and created chances for himself as well as Seniors John White and Andrew Rossetti - each hitting the post once. Junior Sam Vlahoplus made a couple of nice saves to keep the score knotted at 0-0.

The Caps kept up the pressure in the second half and were rewarded 20 minutes in with goals in quick succession. On the first one, Omar played a beautiful long ball to Andrew Rossetti (the 3rd leading scorer in Class 4A as per MaxPreps) who beat two defenders to slot it home and make it 1-0. Not five minutes later, Rossetti made a run and played a delicate through ball between two Panther Creek defenders to John White who made no mistake with his left foot - 2-0 Caps.

But, as you learn when you play soccer in the best county in NC, you can't let up and Panther Creek fought back to 2-2. In the last 10 seconds, Broughton almost got the late winner as those same three people connected and John White's shot was saved by the GK and Andrew's cries for a PK on the rebound went unanswered.

All in all, it was a much better performance on Saturday and bodes well for getting 6 points this week against Corinth Holders and Woods Charter. However, as we learned this weekend, we can't take anything for granted and must finish out our opponents each night.

Enloe Edges Lady Caps

Broughton's Lady Caps visited the Enloe Women's Eagles courts for their second match in conference play. The Lady Caps were tough in the singles courts but fell behind 4-2 after singles. Doubles matches were 2-1 in favor of the Eagles. The number three doubles court of Addie Camak and Eva Stewart Taylor played a well fought match but a foreign exchange student at Enloe, Lib Vallot, ranked #7 on their depth chart, paired with J. Ye to dominate the Lady Cap doubles team and secure the win for Enloe.  The Caps are now 2-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Next week the Lady Caps travel to Leesville on Tuesday and host Cardinal Gibbons in the home opener (and opening of the newly renovated courts!). Come out and support your Lady Caps tennis team!

SINGLES:
B. Waters (BHS) def. C. Battle (E) 6-1, 6-0; S. Khullar (E) def. M. Stewart (BHS) 6-0, 6-2; S. Komardgiri (E) def. T. Roberts (BHS) 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9); K. Rogers (E) def. M. Hardesty (BHS); J. Ye (E) def. K. Burroughs (BHS) 6-3, 6-0; A. Camak (BHS) def. E. Agarwal (E) 6-3, 6-4

DOUBLES:
Waters/Roberts (BHS) def. Battle/Komardgiri (E) 8-0; Hardesty/Stewart (BHS) def. Khullar/Rogers (E) 8-5; Ye/Vallot(E) def. Camak/Taylor (BHS) 8-2

BOYS SOCCER: Cary's Fast Start Proves Too Much For The Caps

Sometimes the other team just jumps on you quickly and you don't know what hit you. Last night, Cary (3-1, 0-0) used 3 early goals to rattle the Caps (2-2, 0-0) and it carried them to a 6-2 victory at Cary.

The first 5-10 minutes actually went well for Broughton as good pressure led to 3 straight long Andrew Rossetti throws into the box that were almost put in by Lucas Beeson and Bryce Meredith. But then, and with little warning, Cary struck for 3 goals in 10 minutes. We did respond with a nice goal as Jack Eubank played a cross into TZOo who finished nicely to make it 1-3. However, a lapse in the back and a ridiculous PK call in the last 8 minutes left us down 1-5.

Proudly, the boys showed much fight in the second half and the response was rewarded with Andrew Rossetti making a run down the right side from midfield and playing a great ball to Junior Parker Willis who skillfully volleyed it home to make it 2-5. Alas, the pressure didn't result in any more goals and with 10 minutes left, Cary got a 6th and the game was over.

Coach Cantrell will work to regroup the boys and not let this one game ruin their season as there is still MUCH to play for. His work is cut out for him as we play on Saturday against Panther Creek at 9A at Wake Med #3, but will be without many players taking the SAT. Time to show some Cap pride and right the ship.

BOYS SOCCER: Captains Named for 2018

Prior to the start of the game last night, Coach Michael Cantrell named his Captains for 2018. All 3 of these boys, beyond being great players and leaders, are members of the National Honor Society and participate in other areas of school.

Ivey O'Brien (#7) - Ivey was an end of year Varsity call up in 2015 and has spent the past 3 years on Varsity squad. He has played several positions, but has settled into a wing back/outside back role for the Caps. If you've come out to watch the boys play, you will have noticed Ivey's barreling runs down the right or left side. Ivey also excels in the classroom and is considering many excellent academic schools for next year.

Andrew Rossetti (#21) - Like Ivey, Andrew got called up to Varsity at the end his his Freshman season and has been a 3-year starter since that time at Wing/Forward. Andrew has been All-Conference in 2016, 2017 and was NCSCA All Region last year. He was also the leading sophomore scorer in the Cap-8 in 2016 and Junior scorer in the Cap-7 in 2017. He recently committed to UNC Asheville to play D1 soccer in Fall 2019 and is on the Senior Class Council for his senior season.

Lucas Beeson (#25) - Lucas has actually been on Varsity all 4 years with the Caps - an amazing achievement - and was All Conference in 2015 & 2016. He has primarily been used up top, but is so strong and versatile that heh has played most every position on the field including playing Center Back in the playoffs last season for Broughton. Lucas, like Ivey & Andrew, has excelled in the classroom and is weighing his college options to play soccer in 2019.

Please join me in congratulating these 3 for the upcoming season.

BOYS SOCCER: Senior Frontline Leads Caps Past Pirates

A win is a win.

In a game that wasn't the prettiest ever played at Broughton Stadium, the Caps (2-1, 0-0) used goals from all 3 Senior attackers to defeat Corinth Holders (2-2, 0-0) by the score of 3-1 to move to over .500 for the season.

Starting Lineup v Corinth Holders

Broughton started out very strong and Andrew Rossetti had a couple good chances to put the Caps up that he unusually missed. Then, in a complete run against play, Corinth Holders played a long ball and their striker made it 0-1. Immediately after, the first Senior to Senior combination took place as Lucas Beeson played it to John White who opened up his account for the season and tied the game up 1-1. More chances for Rossetti and Beeson were saved and halftime found it tied up at 1.

Finally, after a pep talk from Coach Cantrell, the Caps completely dominated the second half with Rossetti and Beeson taking turns scoring and assisting as Andrew Rossetti's corner kick landed on the right foot of Beeson who put it in the top corner to make it 2-1. Not soon after, Beeson played a great ball to Rossetti who beat his man for his 4th goal of the season to make it 3-1, which was the final score.

A special shoutout to a couple of the young guys who came in and did work in the second half: Sophomore's Weston Szarek and Price Pelletier - gave us energy and poise in the midfield.

Next game is on the road at Cary HS - game times are 430/630P.

Lady Caps Serve Up Southeast

The Lady Caps opened their Cap 7 conference play by traveling to play the Southeast Raleigh Bulldogs Women's Tennis Team. The Bulldogs showed graciousness and sportsmanship to the numerically superior Lady Caps. Freshmen Bryles Roberts, Sarah Roane and Margaret Barnette and Sophomore Ivy Johnson played their first high school tennis match and showed they deserve to be called Lady Caps by a dominant win over Southeast, 9-0. The Lady Caps are 1-0 in the conference and 1-1 overall. Thursday they travel to Enloe to avenge last year's losses. Come out to the Enloe courts and cheer on the Caps at 3:30pm.

SINGLES:

L. Roth(BHS) def. L. Tucker (SE) 6-0, 6-0; B. Roberts (BHS) def. J. Saravia (SE) 6-0, 6-0; S. Roane (BHS) def. E. Calles (SE) 6-1, 6-0; M. Barnette (BHS) def. E. McKenzie (SE) 6-0, 6-0; I. Johnson (BHS) def. D. Montenegro (SE) 6-0, 6-0; Z. Durland (BHS) def. A. Calles (SE) 6-0, 6-0

BOYS SOCCER: Rossetti Hat Trick Leads Caps Past Holly Springs

After coming off a tough loss on Wednesday to Green Hope, the Caps (1-1, 0-0) picked themselves back up and rode a hat trick from Andrew Rossetti (Sr) to a 4-3 victory over the Holly Springs Golden Eagles.

Broughton started off strong and Rossetti got his first of the evening after 10 minutes taking a Parker Willis (Jr) corner kick and putting it in the top right corner. Holly Springs equalized a few minutes later and then, in what was probably the prettiest goal of the evening, Duncan Coffey (Sr) made a great run down the left side and put a perfect cross through the Golden Eagle defense to Andrew who slotted it home to make it 2-1. Again, Holly Springs responded and we went to half tied 2-2.

The second half started out a little slow and GK - Hector Martinez Porras (Sr) made a few nice saves to keep the score leveled at 2. Then, the Caps took the lead again as this time Rossetti turned distributor and played Lucas Beeson (Sr) into the box and Lucas powered it past the keeper to make it 3-2. If you haven't been able to tell so far, Holly Springs was tough and after a harsh Red Card shown to Carter Gasia (Sr), the Golden Eagles converted the free kick from just outside the box to make it 3-3.

Despite Holly Springs having a man advantage for the last 15 minutes, Broughton played some of their best soccer of the season and a foul on Holly Springs gave us a free kick from 20 yards out. Jack Eubank (Jr) hit a beautiful left footed rocket off the goal frame and Andrew Rossetti was the first on the spot to guide it through traffic with his left foot to complete his hat trick and score the winning goal 4-3.

After the game was over, Coach Cantrell (who has been able to play most of the available roster in the first two games) said that while the Caps made it harder than necessary, he was proud of the win and "...it's not about being the best now. It's about being the best at the end of the year."

The Caps next game is Tuesday, at home, against Corinth Holders at 630P (JV at 430P). Go Caps!

BOYS SOCCER: Caps Lose Home Opener to Green Hope

It was a tough test to start the season for the Caps (0-1, 0-0) as traditional powerhouse and 4A State Championship favorite Green Hope (2-0, 0-0) came to Broughton last night and defeated the boys 2-0. And while the result wasn't what we'd hoped for, it was a chance to see what we need to do to compete for the Cap-7 title this season and will ultimately prove far more valuable than playing a cupcake to start.

Green Hope's game plan was evident early on as they kept 3-4 defenders back and focused on stopping the Broughton's senior front line of John White, Andrew Rossetti and Lucas Beeson. After 20 minutes of controlling the action, Green Hope scored on a cross into the box that was slotted past Sam Vlahoplus. There were a few chances for us in the first half, the best coming from a left footed cross from Andrew Rossetti to the head of Bryce Meredith which was saved nicely by Green Hope. It is worth noting that Sam did a great job of keeping the score to 0-1 until halftime by making some nice saves.

The Caps were livelier in the second half, but couldn't deliver chances on the Green Hope net. Finally with 15 minutes left, Green Hope got a deserved second goal and that put the game away.

The good news is that we don't have time to sulk and play another quality opponent in Holly Springs tonight at Broughton Stadium (6:30P). Please come out to support the team.

The Lady Caps' first match on Tuesday was rained out against non-conference opponent Cary High School.

Today, the Lady Caps traveled to the Cary Tennis Park to take on powerhouse non-conference opponent the Green Hope High School Falcons. The Lady Falcons put up huge singles games sweeping the Broughton Women. In doubles, the Caps took the two and three courts but dropped the number one court to the Falcons for a final score of 7-2 for Green Hope. All of the Lady Caps, 0-1 overall, now turn their attention to their Cap7 Conference opener against Southeast Raleigh next week.
