BOYS SOCCER: #20 Caps Rained Out On Thursday

Only 7 minutes into the game Thursday night, Mother Nature (who is undefeated) showed up in great form and our game against SE Raleigh was again canceled and will be rescheduled at a later date.

The Caps were already ahead 1-0 thanks to John White (assist Alex Dunne) before the game was called, but all gets wiped out and we get to try for a third time to play this game.

Next Monday: big Cap-7 game against Millbrook at Millbrook #SkoCaps

BOYS SOCCER: #20 Caps Take Down #14 Spartans 1-0

They all count the same.

But this one may end up being more important for the #20 Caps (7-5-1, 1-2) as they rode a goal in the first 20 seconds to a 1-0 victory over #14 Sanderson (5-6-2, 0-4) in a lightning shortened match to get their first Cap-7 victory against a quality opponent.

Starting Lineup v Sanderson

FIRST HALF:
Well, the weather was beautiful at kickoff and not even 20 seconds into the game, Broughton got the goal that would prove to be the winner as Senior John White played a great cross through the box to Andrew Rossetti who slotted it home in the left corner for his 11th goal and make the score 1-0. The boys created a few more chances over the next 15 minutes only to see the Sanderson GK make several nice saves.

Then, Sanderson found their footing in the match and that forced GK Sam Vlahoplus into some good saves. The midfield was missing Bryce Meredith, but Parker Willis, Price Pelletier, Duncan Coffey and Ivey O'Brien held it down well and kept the score 1-0 at halftime.

SECOND HALF:
It was at halftime when you quickly realized that the sky was turning nasty and the lightning (which was still 20+ miles away) was lighting up the sky. The Caps didn't notice the weather and had a good chance to put the game away early in the second, but the cross from Lucas to Andrew - who then played John - saw his shot go just over the bar and keep it a one goal advantage.

Unfortunately, Lucas Beeson saw his second yellow card in the game and was shown red with 28 minutes left in the second half. So, the Caps played down for the remaining time and will be without one of our Captain's for the next game.

The lightning ended up winning and with 20 minutes left, the game was called.

NEXT UP:
Weather permitting, the Caps will be playing SE Raleigh tonight at home. If the rain calls off the game, we'll head to Millbrook next Monday.

Cardinal Gibbons Edges Lady Caps Tennis

Junior Addie Camak and Senior Katie Burroughs pose after their doubles win at Cardinal Gibbons

The Broughton Lady Caps traveled to the home turf of the Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders today. The Lady Crusaders were seeking revenge for their earlier season loss at Broughton's home court. The Lady Caps worked hard to win but lost two big tiebreakers that gave the Crusaders the win, 6-3. Sophomore Trevlyn Roberts handily defeater her Gibbons opponent on the number two doubles court. Also, Senior Katie Burroughs and Sophomore Addie Camak had a great win at the number three doubles court 8-6. The Lady Caps are now 7-4 overall and 7-3 in conference play. They meet Sanderson at home on Thursday at 3:30pm and travel to Millbrook on Monday at 3:30pm.  Let's go CAPS!!!!

BOYS SOCCER: #20 Caps Fall On The Road To #11 Cardinal Gibbons

It is always tough to travel to Cardinal Gibbons, and that proved true again last night as #20 Broughton (6-5-1, 0-2) couldn't maintain an early lead and fell to the Crusaders (8-2-2, 2-1) by the count of 4-1.

Starting Lineup v CGHS

FIRST HALF:
Despite being on the road, the Caps actually started out the better team for the first 30 minutes of the first half by controlling possession and taking advantages of attacking opportunities. Midfielders Bryce Meredith and Parker Willis did a great job of dictating action and setting up their teammates. After just missing on a shot from inside the 18, Senior Andrew Rossetti got his 10th goal of the season thanks to the amazing energy and efforts of Ivey O'Brien who worked the ball past several Gibbons defenders to find Andrew who slotted it home. After that, Broughton almost scored again as Senior John White sauced multiple Crusaders only to see his left footed shot narrowly miss the top corner.

Then, and against the run of play, Gibbons scored twice in the final 5 minutes and took a surprising 2-1 lead to halftime.

SECOND HALF:
In summary: not good.

Gibbons scored quickly into the second frame and it was only thanks to the Herculean efforts of Senior Ryan Meredith and Duncan Coffey that a few more didn't get let in. Everything the Caps tried to do to get going was thwarted by the Crusaders and with a few minutes left, they scored a deserving 4th goal to close the scoring at 4-1.

NEXT UP:
The good news is that Broughton has two quick chances to get back to .500 in conference as we play #14 Sanderson and SE Raleigh at home on Wednesday and Thursday. Let's go get it.

BOYS SOCCER: #20 Caps Lose In PK's to #14 Pride 1-0

What. A. Game.

In a game that was truly deserving of a tie (and one of the best I've seen in 4 years), #20 Broughton (6-4-1, 0-1) played their strongest all-around game of the season and took #14 Leesville Road(5-4-1, 2-1) to PK's - only to lose by 4PK's to 2PK's and suffer a loss in the Cap-7 opener.

Starting Lineup:

GK:

Ryan Meredith (Sr)

DEF:

Price Pelletier (So)
Logan Hunter (Sr)
Jack Eubank (Jr)

MID:

Duncan Coffey (Sr)
Ivey O'Brien (Sr - Captain)
Bryce Meredith (Sr)
Parker Willis (Jr)

FWD:

John White (Sr)
Lucas Beeson (Sr - Captain)
Andrew Rossetti (Sr - Captain)

First Half:

The Caps started strong and were really controlling the ball and the midfield. Early chances fell to John White and Andrew Rossetti who were both saved by the excellent Leesville Road GK.  Bryce Meredith, Parker Willis, Ivey O'Brien & Duncan Coffey continued to press the Pride midfield and never allowed them a chance to get comfortable. The pressure paid off right before halftime as Lucas Beeson held up the ball very well and then played it to Ivey on the right wing and his shot beat the GK but hit off the right post. Leesville had some chances but at the end of 40 minutes it was 0-0.

Second Half:

Leesville proved why they were ranked #14 and took the pressure to us in the first 25 minutes of the second half. However, Logan Hunter, Jack Eubank and Price Pelletier were up for the challenge and provided Ryan enough cover to keep it out of our net.

We finally got our second wind and again had chances fall to John and Bryce and again were either just out of reach of the posts or the GK made good saves on them.  Jack Eubank also had a great look at a free kick from just outside the top of the box and his attempt went just wide. With 30 seconds left, the Caps had the chance to finish the game as Ivey played a delicate pass to Andrew who made his run, beat his man and put it on frame only to see the Leesville GK make an unbelievable kick save to keep us at 0-0 and off to OT.

First OT:

The first 5 minutes saw the game go back and forth, but the best chance again came to the Caps as Andrew beat his man in the right corner and dribbled down the end line and played it to Lucas who rifled a shot that was (again) saved by the Leesville GK. 0-0.

Second OT:

Leesville had the first chance and their #9 hit a bullet of a left footed shot just wide of the far post. Ryan also got big and stopped a scrum in the box to keep us 0-0. The final best chance went to the Caps as a throw in went to John who played it nicely across to Duncan whose absolute cannon up top was reflex saved by Leesville and we ended 0-0.

PK:

Unfortunately, the PK's just didn't go our way as out first two shooters had their shots saved and by the time that we made our first two (Andrew and Bryce) it was too little too late and the final was 4-2 Leesville. HOWEVER, I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge one of the best saves I've ever seen by Ryan on Leesville's 4th PK taker. He dove left and with his off hand - punched a clear goal wide. The videos of our two goals and Ryan's save is below.

No need for tears as if the boys play like this - good things will come from this season. 3 games next week: Monday at CGHS, Wednesday home v Sanderson and Thursday home v SE Raleigh. The Cap-7 can still be ours. #SkoCaps

Women's Tennis Perforates Lady Pride

The Broughton High School Lady Caps tennis team met the Leesville Road Lady Pride at Broughton for the second time this year. The tennis courts at Leesville Road are still under construction forcing the second game between the two to be played at Broughton. The Caps came out strong easily winning the top four singles courts. Seniors Becket Waters, Meg Hardesty and Katie Burroughs along with Sophomore Trevlyn Roberts had strong wins against their Lady Pride opponents. Waters and Roberts did not survive the last minute surge by the Pride's number one doubles team, losing 9-7. Hardesty and Burroughs claimed victory for their doubles game on the number two court 8-3 and sealed the Caps victory 5-4 over the Pride. The Caps are now 6-3 overall and 6-2 in the Cap 7 conference. Next week proves to be a big week as the Caps face Southeast on Monday and Sanderson on Thursday at home, but traveling to Cardinal Gibbons on Wednesday. BOYS SOCCER: John White Nets 5 To Help Broughton Win 10-3

John White....Have a day young fellow!

In a game that was controlled by the Caps (6-3-1, 0-0) in every way possible, Senior John White scored an incredible 5 goals to help lead us past an over-matched Rolesville team (1-6) by the score of 10-3.

 Starting Lineup v Rolesville

Broughton started out quickly as Captain Lucas Beeson found Captain Andrew Rossetti to put us up 1-0. Not 3 minutes later, Captain Ivey O'Brien played a good cross that Andrew Rossetti headed home to make it 2-0. Not a few minutes after that, TZOo played it through the middle and Duncan Coffey curved one in from the left side and it was 3-0.

Then, the first half John White show started:

Goal 1 was a pretty pass from Lucas Beeson to John who expertly beat the GK to make it 4-0.
Goal 2 was Sophomore Price Pelletier to John who rifled it by the GK 6-0
Goal 3 was a repeat of Goal 2 - 7-0
Goal 4 was started by Jack White who ripped a shot that was saved and then tipped by Andrew Rossetti to John who made no doubt and buried it to make it 8-0

In the middle of these goals was a nice goal by Senior Logan Hunter - assisted by Andrew Rossetti - and then 2 goals from Rolesville.

So, at halftime it was 8-2 Broughton.

Rolesville actually acquitted themselves well in the second half. Broughton scored as a long throw-in from Andrew came to Ivey O'Brien who made it 9-2. And then a repeat of the first goal as Lucas made a long pass to John who, surprise, didn't miss and coolly beat the GK for 10-2. Rolesville got one at the end and 10-3 was the final.

Final Stats:

John White 5G
Andrew Rossetti 2G/3A
Lucas Beeson 3A
Ivey O'Brien 1G/1A
Ducan Coffey 1G
Price Pelletier 2A
Logan Hunter 1G
TZOo 1A

With the victory, Broughton ends the non-conference portion of our schedule at 6-3-1. Weather permitting, we open up tomorrow night against SE Raleigh hoping to go 1-0 in the Cap-7.

Sanderson Slices Lady Caps Tennis

Senior Katie Burroughs after her win at Sanderson.

The Broughton Lady Caps Women's tennis team visited Sanderson to make up the game missed last week due to Sanderson rescheduling the match. The Lady Caps played flat against the Spartans and the match score of 3-6 revealed just how flat the play was. The bright spot in singles play was at the number four court where Senior Katie Burroughs battled back from being a set down to win in a tiebreaker, 10-6. Senior Meg Hardesty and Sophomore Maia Stewart continued their winning ways at the number two doubles court winning 8-6. The Lady Caps are now 4-3 overall and 4-2 in the Cap 7 conference. They are scheduled to play Southeast Raleigh on Thursday but with Hurricane Florence headed into the coast of North Carolina, play may likely be postponed to another date. Come support the Lady Caps!

SINGLES:

BOYS SOCCER: Caps Lose At #10 Athens Drive

It is never a good recipe to play 2 games back to back against Top 11 teams - and have 4 players out sick (including starters John White and Bryce Meredith) - AND have a player break their arm early in the match. The result was Broughton (5-3-1, 0-0) never really getting their footing in the game and losing 3-0 to the very strong Athens Drive Cougars (7-0-2).

Starting Lineup v Athens Drive

There really isn't much positive to report on the first half as the Caps looked sluggish from the start. Athens Drive scored a couple of long range goals that beat Ryan Meredith in the top corner (there was nothing he could do). And, as alluded to above, on a very rough, dirty foul, Sophomore Omar Stallings broke his arm and will be out indefinitely.

The Caps played better in the second half and created chances for Lucas Beeson and Andrew Rossetti. The best chance to cut the lead came from a great Ivey O'Brien run down the right and cross to Duncan Coffey whose header was tipped just over the bar. Athens Drive got the final goal with a few minutes left and the Caps pressed up high for a goal.

Next week should prove to be a little easier than this week as we travel to a much improved Rolesville on Monday and then open up our Cap-7 schedule with a visit from SE Raleigh on Wednesday evening. Need 2 W's to be 7-3-1 heading into Enloe in two weeks.

Rest this weekend and keep an eye out for Hurricane Florence.....

Wonen's Tennis Muscles Millbrook

The Broughton Lady Caps celebrate their 9-0 win over Millbrook!
The Broughton Lady caps dominated the Millbrook Wildcats by winning 9-0 on a very humid and hot day. Sweeping all courts, the Lady Caps had their second shutout of the season by dominating play. Sophomore Trevlyn Roberts was in a heated battle at the number two singles court when her Millbrook opponent, Shea Cirillo, developed a severe leg cramp and had to retire. Becket Waters and Maia Stewart won close matches on the one and three courts, respectively, while Meg Hardesty, Katie Burroughs and Addie Camak convincingly beat their respective opponents at the four, five and six singles courts. The Caps also cleared all three doubles courts with 6-0 wins (the games were shortened due to the late hour and the heat). The Lady Caps are now 4-2 overall and 4-1 in the Cap 7 conference. Next week the Caps face Sanderson in an away make up game on Monday and play Southeast at home on Thursday. Come out and support the Lady Caps tennis team!

SINGLES:

B. Waters (BHS) def. B. Taranto (MHS) 10-8; T. Roberts (BHS) def. S. Cirillo {Ret} 8-7; M. Stewart (BHS) def. A. Shea (MHS) 10-8; M. Hardesty (BHS) def. S. Adams (MHS) 10-0; K. Burroughs (BHS) def. K. Parebiana (MHS) 10-2; A. Camak (BHS) def. T. Spence (MHS) 10-1

BOYS SOCCER: Caps Upset #11 Wake Forest On The Road

What a game.

The Caps (5-2-1, 0-0) came from behind in the second half to score two unanswered goals and defeat the #11 ranked, and previously unbeaten WF Cougars (6-1-2) by the score of 2-1.

 Starting Lineup v WF

The game started off as a stalemate as both teams had chances to take the lead in the first 20 minutes. Senior Ryan Meredith was fantastic in the net and made several saves on breakaways to keep us knotted at 0. Wake Forest proved why they were undefeated and scored on a nice goal with about 10 minutes to halftime. The Caps pressed but couldn't find the back of the net.

After a halftime pep talk by Coach Cantrell where he told the boys to "show their class" - the Caps came out like a new team and took the game to the Cougars. After some possession for the good guys, Andrew Rossetti's corner kick hit off a Cary player to the left foot of Parker Willis who absolutely destroyed a left footed volley to the right corner (see video below).

Within 5 minutes of that beautiful goal, the Caps scored again as Senior Andrew Rossetti made a fantastic run down the right side, beating 2 defenders, and then floated a cross to Senior Lucas Beeson who powered a header past the GK to make it 2-1.

The last 20 minutes were back and forth, and again, thanks to Ryan Meredith and the back line of Logan Hunter, Jack Eubank, Duncan Coffey, Price Pelletier and Ivey O'Brien - we kept them out to get the deserved, needed road victory.

However, no rest for the weary as Broughton travels to undefeated and #10 ranked Athens Drive today for another test of our stamina and character. Win this one and we may just have jump started the season.
